Malaysia has 71 5G use cases demonstration led by private companies, namely Celcom, Digi, edotco, Maxis, Petronas, Telekom Malaysia, U Mobile, and YTL. File Photo
KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 1): Malaysia will invest significantly in the latest generation telecommunications and other technologies in the quest to achieve a high-income nation status, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah.
He said so far, Malaysia has 71 5G use cases demonstration led by private companies, namely Celcom, Digi, edotco, Maxis, Petronas, Telekom Malaysia, U Mobile, and YTL, as well as their ecosystem partners consisting of digital solution providers, ministries, agencies, integrators and vendors.
“These use cases were demonstrated across seven states (Kedah, Pahang, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Terengganu and the Federal Territories) with a total industry investment of RM131 million.
“These projects focus on facilitating and cultivating the development of a holistic and inclusive 5G ecosystem, which stimulates the demand, as well as adoption,” he said in his keynote address at the Invest Malaysia 2020 — Virtual Series 3, here today.
Saifuddin said as various industries adopt 5G, it could positively influence other industries’ contribution rate to the gross domestic product (GDP) effectively, allowing the country to produce and manufacture more high-quality goods and services, ultimately benefitting the rakyat with improved earnings and affordability.
He said the government has extended the period of the 5G demonstration project (5GDP) until Dec 31, 2020.
“To the innovators, service providers, and relevant stakeholders, this is an exciting time for Malaysia. I urge you to come forward and participate in the 5GDP,” he said.
He said Malaysia is expediting the improvement of connectivity for both fibre optic and 4G as a means to ensure that the 5G rollout will be done in an efficient and effective manner.
Hence, the 5G deployment will benefit consumers without a significant increase in cost of service; industries will be able to roll out their respective solutions utilising 5G; and an expeditious use of the invested network for the service providers, he added.
“Such a healthy eco-system will contribute significantly to the national agenda of Digital Malaysia and thereby the national GDP,” he said. – Bernama
KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 1): The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) hopes the Cabinet will unanimously agree with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s suggestion of raising the Social Welfare Department’s monthly aid for needy people.
It’s secretary-general, J.Solomon said MTUC welcomed the prime minister’s proposal to increase the monthly aid to RM1,000 from the current amount of between RM200 and RM300.
“This (increasing amount of monthly aid) does not require any passing of laws, but just a cabinet’s decision and internal circulars would suffice once the Finance Ministry sources the funds.
“So not much feedback or studies are necessary as the Welfare Department will have the database of those eligible,” he said in a statement, today.
Last Saturday, Muhyiddin said a proposal to raise the Social Welfare Department’s monthly aid of between RM200 and RM300 for needy people to RM1,000 would be tabled at the Cabinet meeting this week.
Solomon also urged the Cabinet to extend the welfare aid to two other categories of Malaysians, namely recipients of the Social Security Organisation (Socso) pension who receive less than RM2,000 a month and workers in the B40 category who earn less than RM4,000 a month. – Bernama
The GoPro Hero line of action cams have screens in front, but they’ve mostly been used as a notification and status screen. With the GoPro Hero 9 Black though, you may be able to see what you’re recording in real time. This is because the upcoming action cam may be coming with a full-colour display in front.
Leaked renders obtained by WinFuture suggests that the GoPro Hero 9 will come with full-colour displays both in front at at the back. The size of the front display looks to be the same as the current monochrome versions. In addition to being able to see what the camera sees, this display should still be able to do what it did before.
The change to making the monochrome display in front into a colour screen may have something to do with the rise of vlogging. After all, just last month GoPro released firmware updates that allowed some of the more recent models to act as a webcam. And it was only a few days ago that it introduced its own premium live streaming service.
Beyond the full-colour display in front though, it looks like there won’t be many other changes with the GoPro Hero 9 Black. Though we’ll only be sure once the company makes an official announcement. Judging from the current generation GoPro Hero 8 Black, we may have to wait until October before we get official word.
Samsung recently announced that it has begun mass production of its 16GB LPDDR5 RAM for mobile devices. It says that its production efforts will be conducted at its second production line within its home country of South Korea.
The new 16GB LPDDR5 is based on the company’s 3rd generation 10nm 1z process and, like its predecessors, is built using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology. As per Samsung’s official press statement, its 1z-based 16GB LPDDR5 RAM will reportedly bost the highest mobile memory performance of its kind, and with enable more consumers. And will provide feature support for 5G and AI in next-generation smartphones.
Technically speaking, Samsung’s LPDDR5 RAM will run at a maximum speed of 6400MB/s, approximately 16% faster than the current 12GB LPDDR5 in many flagship mobile devices. At that speed, Samsung says that transferring files as large as 51.2GB can be done in a single second. Additionally, the new memory package will also be 30% thinner.
Samsung says that its new 16GB LPDDR5 RAM will be available on flagship mobile device sometime in 2021, although it fell short of giving an exact date.

KOTA KINABALU: Philippines’ Foreign Secretary, Teodoro Locsin Jr, has announced his aim to revive an office in the Department of Foreign Affairs dedicated to claiming Sabah after Malaysia issued a note verbale on the claim last week.
Filipino newspaper, The Inquirer, said in a report today that Locsin had brought up the defunct Office of North Borneo Affairs following a series of tweets in which he alleged that there had been “repeated offers” to drop the claim over Sabah.
“Wonder if it’s still up. Will resurrect or revitalize it,” he said, referring to the office.
The newspaper said Locsin, in a tweet on Sunday, had implied that “huge” bribe offers had been made to Philippine officials to drop the Sabah claim.
“As a matter of history there have been repeated offers to abandon our Sabah claim from aspiring presidential candidates since the late 1970s, usually opposition because they are most in need of campaign funds but administration as well,” Locsin tweeted.
He followed this up with a tweet yesterday in which he said: “The Filipino public must know that what is on offer is huge so the temptation to betray is commensurately humongous. Leaving it to diplomats is not enough to safeguard the national interest in the matter. There’s the additional temptation to feel welcome in the host country.”
The Inquirer had earlier reported that the Permanent Mission of Malaysia to the United Nations had submitted a note verbale, a form of diplomatic communication, dated last Friday.
It said the note verbale read that Kuala Lumpur “has never recognized the Republic of the Philippines’ claim to the Malaysian state of Sabah, formerly known as North Borneo.”
The newspaper added that Malaysia highlighted the October 2001 decision by the Judgement of the International Court of Justice on Manila’s claims over the disputed state.
The Philippines claim over Sabah has been a long standing issue which has its beginnings during the time of the Sultanate of Sulu.
About two weeks ago, the issue heated up when the Philippines House Committee on Foreign Affairs approved a Bill seeking the printing of the country’s map through an amendment that included a 200-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and Sabah on Philippines passports.

With the ever growing number of rival video streaming services now available in the market, it is easy to see why the company is resulting in such approaches to attract new subscribers. Prior to this, Netflix offered a 30-day trial to users – with the option to cancel the subscription at any time. However, users are still required to register to the service and provide their payment details in order to sample its content.
This time around, the company is offering a variety of platform exclusive movies, documentaries and TV shows, as a way to give potential subscribers a taste of what to expect from the streaming service. The titles included in the list of free streaming content include Bird Box, Murder Mystery, Our Planet, Stranger Things, and more. However, the TV shows offered in this trial are only limited to their first episodes.
The free movies, documentaries and TV shows are only available via the service’s official website, which is accessible by using a computer or Android device. Netflix noted that the content is not available through its mobile application, and is not supported on iOS browsers.

Apple is usually extremely strict when it comes to approving software for its ecosystem. The company even put into place an approval process called notarisation, where apps have to go through security checks before they can run on Macs. But it appears that one of the most common Mac malware has slipped through this safety net.
Security researchers Peter Dantini and Patrick Wardle found the malware disguised as an Adobe Flash installer. Known as the Shlayer, it was rated by Kaspersky as the most common threat for Macs in 2019. And what it does is intercept encrypted web traffic, replacing websites and search results with its own ads.
Wardle says that this is the first time Apple has approved of a known malware. TechCrunch reports that thanks to the report by Dantini and Wardle, Apple revoked the notarised malware shortly after the researchers reached out to the company.
Not too long after, the hackers have managed to get another malware slip past Apple’s notarisation process again. The company has already responded by blocking the payload at the time of writing.
What’s interesting is that these two incidents happened seemingly in the span of three days. According to Wardle’s blog post, Apple revoked the authorisation for the first variant on 28 August. The second one was authorised shortly after, and blocked again on 31 August.

MIRI (Sept 1): Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak has slammed Pasir Puteh MP Nik Muhammad Zawawi Nik Salleh for saying that the “Bible has been corrupted or manipulated”.
Its State Leadership Council member Josephine Mawat said the statement uttered by the Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) member of parliament was totally unacceptable and an insult to the Christians.
Hence, she said PKR Sarawak urged Nik Muhammad Zawawi to immediately retract his statement and make a public apology to all Christians.
“Such a blatant disregard for the beliefs of other races and religions has no place in a multi-cultural Malaysia.
“It also goes against the spirit of Malaysia’s Independence and Merdeka which emphasised mutual respect, tolerance and harmony amongst all communities,” she said in a press statement last night.
Josephine said PKR Sarawak also called on the Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun to use Standing Order 36(10)(c) to take disciplinary action against Nik Muhammad Zawawi and order him to apologise as the statement is deemed a grave insult to the religious belief of all Christians.
She added that PKR Sarawak fully supported the statement by the Chairman of the Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS) Archbishop Simon Poh that Nik Muhammad Zawawi should retract his statement and make a public apology to all Christians.
“PKR Sarawak condemns all acts of disrupting unity and peace in our nation which we love. Sarawakians are peace loving people.
“In Sarawak, we are proud of our long heritage of religious tolerance and racial unity. We have shown the world that we are able to live side by side as fellow brothers and sisters with trust, understanding and respect.
“We cannot afford for the seeds of disunity and religious hatred to be sown in our society and to poison the future generation,” she said.
Josephine said PKR Sarawak would like to invite Nik Muhammad Zawawi to visit the state to learn the fundamentals of peaceful and respectful engagement and religious tolerance in the state.
“We in Sarawak hold firm to the saying ‘No matter how many times the teeth bites the tongue, they will still stay and work together’.
“Therefore, we are willing to extend the spirit of forgiveness to Nik Muhammad Zawawi for his comments. However, he too must recognise the mistake he has made and be willing to apologise in a spirit of humility for the sake of national peace, harmony and unity,” she stressed.
She said all forms of religious bigotry and intolerance in Sarawak and Malaysia must be rejected, and that the party would not allow political groups such as PAS to destroy the diversity and unity in Sarawak.
“We call on the Sarawak government and the component parties in Gabungan Parti Sarawak to also reject PAS over their complete disregard and disrespect for Sarawak’s Christian community and to cease any form of co-operation with PAS in the Perikatan Nasional government with immediate effect,” Josephine added.
KUALA LUMPUR: A website which purportedly belongs to a mining company has falsely listed Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah as its chief operating officer (COO).
It displayed a photograph of Dr Noor Hisham with the post of COO although the name given was different. The website also displayed the photographs and names of other members of the company management.
Dr Noor Hisham, in a posting on his Facebook yesterday, dissociated himself from the company.
“For the information of the public, Syarikat Kashi Mining used my photograph, listing me as the COO on its website! Clearly, this is fake,” he said, sharing the link to the website.
However, attempts by Bernama found that the website could no longer be accessed. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: The principles contained in the Rukun Negara, that will be included in the education system is not for show, it must be put into practice, said National Unity Minister Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique.
Halimah said the Rukun Negara education, which is closely related to unity, indeed reflects the homeland which has a unique and plural composition of people.
“The Ministry is confident that one of the keys to the success of unity lies in the people’s appreciation and understanding of the principles of Rukun Negara. The Rukun Negara education is key to fostering unity and this unity reflects diversity.
“We want to rekindle unity among the races. So the values of unity must be nurtured to remain ingrained in the souls of Malaysians and not waste all the sacrifices of our independence fighters,” she said in the first part of the Rukun Negara Programme, A Nation United telecast by Bernama TV last night.
In the meantime, she informed that the campaign for the People’s Feedback Session on the National Unity Action Plan (PTPN) for 2021-2025, has been implemented in each state.
On Aug 25, in the Dewan Rakyat, Halimah said her ministry was in the process of holding a roadshow to include the people’s input in PTPN 2021-2025.
She said it was to produce a policy that included ideas to strengthen unity regardless of limitations including Sabah and Sarawak. — Bernama

KUCHING (Aug 31): Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has expressed his hope that the people of Sarawak would understand the government’s situation in addressing issues for the well-being and progress of the state.
He said not all problems can be solved in a short period of time even though the Sarawak government is always planning and implementing development programmes to ensure that the people can live in peace, prosperity and comfort.
“As a caring government, we are always thinking about how to continue our efforts of finding the best way to develop the state.
“Therefore, the theme of this year’s National Day namely ‘Malaysia Prihatin’ is very apt and relevant because in Sarawak, we also practise the concept of ‘Sarawak Prihatin’ towards the well-being of our rakyat,” he said at the state-level National Day celebration at Sri Aman Civic Centre in Simanggang, Sri Aman today.
Also present were Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and State Secretary Datuk Amar Jaul Samion.
Abdul Karim, who is also the minister-in-charge of the celebration, said over the last 57 years since the formation of Malaysia in 1963, Sarawak has achieved several feats of development.
“Right now, we have a lot of major projects being carried out such as the Pan Borneo Highway, construction of bridges and other infrastructures, the development of Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (Score) industrial areas and so on and we hope that we can enjoy a better economic growth and perfect roads in the next few years,” he said.
Also equally important, he said, is the people’s support to the government which must be continued to ensure that the government stays strong and stable to continue the struggle for development.
“Without the support of the people and close cooperation with the government, it is certain that what we wish for cannot be easily achieved because we are not united.
“For instance this National Day celebration, if there is no cooperation between all government agencies, the private sector and the public, the event will not be organised successfully,” he added.
He stressed that the people must continue to work together to build peace, unity and progress for the state of Sarawak.
“That is why we have organised the ‘Unity Walk’ event in conjunction with the state-level National Day celebration to strengthen racial unity and forge the bond of friendship among the various races in Sarawak.
“Without the existence of close racial unity, it is certainly difficult for us to develop the state because we would have no focus,” he said.
The Youth and Sports Minister also said that the younger generation and youths also play a crucial role in this matter because they are the next generation of leaders and key to the country’s future.
“It is therefore very important for youths and the younger generation to constantly be pursuing knowledge and learning new things so that they can become individuals who are of calibre, capable, visionary and just in all matters,” he said.

KUCHING: Team Static from SMK Lutong, Miri was announced the national champion of Shell’s #MyGeekMovement 2020, a competition that challenges school students to work in teams to design and innovate solutions to real-world problems within the nexus of energy-food-water.
With the ‘new normal’ situation in relations to the COVID-19 pandemic in Malaysia, the #MyGeekMovement finals was tweaked and guided with stricter health and safety procedures as well as by leveraging the virtual environment. The judging of the #MyGeekMovement National Grand Finals 2020 was organised using online project submissions and virtual deliberations.
The wining team which comprises Anisha Praveen Karunakaran, Daphne Douglas and Liew Jia Wen came up with an invention called Chillax, which is an affordable, innovative and eco-friendly alternative to cool down a house.
Capitalising on the evaporative cooling effect, the solution consists of an automated sprinkler system supported by rainwater, solar panel, temperature sensor and water pump as well as a mobile app to monitor and control the entire system.
“We would like to thank our mentors, teachers and friends for their infinite support and help in our initiative. We put in a lot of hard work into this project but the most important thing that we have taken from this project are the skills and valuable experiences that we’ve gained throughout this journey,” shared Team Static of SMK Lutong, Miri.
According to the all-girls team, due to the Movement Control Order, they were only able to meet physically once, hence they had to meet up virtually quite frequently in order to complete their invention video. They helped each other stay on track and this ensured the successful completion of their video before the due date. Along the way, they garnered new skills in video editing and in concise presentation methods.
Six schools, two finalists each from Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak participated in the national finals after emerging state winners and runners up of the state level #MyGeek-a-thon competition. The six finalists comprised SMK Lutong, Miri from Sarawak; SM Sung Siew, Sandakan and SM St. Michael, Penampang from Sabah and SMK Aminuddin Baki, Kuala Lumpur from Peninsular Malaysia.
“In today’s world where our young generation are very much inclined towards technology, it’s imperative to nurture their interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through creative methods. This prepares Malaysia’s students for the future job market and helps them thrive in it. In Shell, our STEM programme modules are built around Shell’s ambition to be a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050.
“Therefore, the young students in this #MyGeekMovement programme are contributing to these goals through the cultivation of creative thinking, innovation, problem solving skills and the ability to work as a team towards reaching their goals,” explained Nimmi Kamal, General Manager, External Relations, Shell Malaysia.
#MyGeekMovement provides learning content that complements the existing school co-curricular structure with a long-term goal to increase the number of students opting for science stream, while boosting interest in science and technology amongst the younger generation.
“All participants have done a great job in their inventions towards solving the food, water and energy nexus. I commend the efforts which had clearly depicts their invocation and capability in STEM.

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 31): Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdulllah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has granted an early pardon to 13 convicts in conjunction with the country’s 63rd National Day today.
According to Istana Negara’s Comptroller of the Royal Household, Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, the convicts were serving life sentences handed out by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Dec 28, 2001 on charges under Section 121 of the Penal Code with waging war or attempting to wage war or abetting to wage war against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong or State Ruler or the Yang di-Pertua Negeri.
“The consent by Al-Sultan Abdullah is exercised under Article 42 of the Federal Constitution following advice by the Pardons Board of the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.
“All 13 convicts serving the life sentences since 2001 had appealed for a pardon on their sentences,” he said in a statement here today.
Ahmad Fadil said Al-Sultan Abdullah, upon the advice of the Pardons Board of the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya that met on Sept 4 last year, had consented to the release of the 13 on a date to be notified later.
He said His Majesty, upon the advice of the same board in a meeting held on July 24 this year then consented for the convicts’ release to take effect in August 2020.
Ahmad Fadil said the early pardon was due to their good behaviour while in prison and meant for the 13 to return the society, turn over a new leaf and live a normal life.
“Al-Sultan Abdullah also hopes that the 13 would reflect on their mistakes, to repent and evaluate their relationship with God, their family and society,” he said.
His Majesty also hoped that the 13 would be able to live new lives with their loved ones and play their role as citizens dedicated to religion, race and country, Ahmad Fadil said. – Bernama
KUCHING: Zecon Bhd returned to profitability for the financial year ended June 30, 2020 (FY20), with a net profit of RM39.744 million against a net loss of RM20.97 million in FY19.
The property and construction firm also recorded a higher revenue of RM507.51 million compared to RM370.44 million previously.
For the fourth quarter, the Sarawak-based group also returned to the black, chalking up a net profit of RM2.6 million versus a net loss of RM5 million in the same corresponding quarter a year ago, while revenue for the quarter under review dipped to RM40.2 million from RM78.2 million previously.
“The gross profit recorded by the group during the quarter was mainly contributed by the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Specialist Children’s Hospital and Pan Borneo Highway projects.
“In addition, the group’s effort in carrying out rationalisation of operating expenses since the beginning of the current financial year paid off,” it said.
Moving forward, Zecon said it will still be registering revenue from its construction projects,
particularly from both the Pan Borneo Highway and UKM Specialist Children’s Hospital Kanak projects.
The Pan Borneo Highway project is progressing well even with the difficulties posted by the movement
Control Order (MCO) and the extended Recovery MCO (RMCO).
The concession period for the Hospital Pakar Kanak-Kanak project is expected to commence operations
by year-end.
“Besides, we are in the midst of finalising our corporate exercise of the proposed renounceable rights issue of up to 576 million new irredeemable convertible preference shares and employees’ share option
scheme.
“The proposed exercise is expected to be fully completed in October. The firm continues to rake in construction revenue from the Pan Borneo Highway (Phase One) project,” it said, adding that the board has
not declared any interim dividend in the current quarter in respect of the financial period ended June 30,
2020. — Bernama
