Personal integrity and principles — wherefore art thou?

I FEEL personally insulted and ashamed that recent events in the political arena in Malaysia have resulted in so many detestable and utterly disgusting acts as politicians from both sides of the political divide have shown themselves to be opportunistic, shallow, and without any personal integrity or basic human principles, as they one by one were tempted to cross over from one political party to another just for either personal glory or monetary gains with positions of power and influence.

In the course of such actions they have abandoned their own parties, constituents, and supporters — those who had put their trust in them by electing them to whatever office they were holding. There is merit to the suggestion that in Parliament we should pass a law forbidding such opportunistic crossovers; to invalidate their elected offices the moment they decide to jump and change their political affiliation.

I come from an era where such acts were considered abhorrent, were not common, and despised and hated by one and all. I come from an era where politicians stayed with their chosen political party come hell or high water; and for this I really must take my hat off to, salute, and remember those who had stood by their original parties in the past. I name them here: Stephen Kalong Ningkan, Abdul Rahman Yakub, Ong Kee Hui, Stephen Yong Kuet Tze, Sim Kheng Hong, James Wong Kim Min, Taib Mahmud, Adenan Satem, Abang Johari Tun Openg, Sim Kui Hian; and from the opposing camp Sim Kwang Yang, Chong Chieng Jen, and Violet Yong.

I have personally been interested in politics ever since young, when my uncle Ong Kee Hui fought his first general election in 1969, when I was 19.  The atmosphere in the air in his residence at Jalan Ong Kee Hui (then known as Pearse’s Road) was electric — we stayed right up till the last results came in around 1.30 the next morning. There was celebration and elation with every seat won by his Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), and sadness and tears with every seat lost, some very marginally. It left an impression on me and I have been caught up with and followed politics ever since.

About 24 years ago, in 1996, when Song Swee Guan was the Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly, I had approached him (he was a very close friend, being my former boss at Borneo Company) and sounded him out about my joining SUPP. His response shook me — he said the time wasn’t right. He was then one of the very few handful of SUPP leaders who were educated in English (he didn’t know Mandarin then); and he told me that the Chinese speaking clique within the party was too strong and clannish, and I wouldn’t be able to make my presence felt.

Then I remembered that exactly 13 years earlier, in 1983, Stephen Yong had approached me with an interest in mentoring me if I were to join SUPP.  I was 33 and had just started building a business career at NBT Toyota – I said thank you but no thanks, as I had valued my private family life more than any possible ambition for one under the public eye. I had known that in politics your life will no longer be your own, it will belong to your party, your constituents, and the public at large. Everything about you is up there on display.

    I never regretted that decision.

In Malaysia and in particular in Sarawak, our history of party politics can only be traced back to 1959, the year that the first political party SUPP was founded by Ong and Yong, and a small group of other compatriots including Yeo Cheng Hoe, Song Thian Cheok, Henry Ong Kee Chuan, Barbara Bay, Chan Siaw Hee, Ee Ghim Yam, Charles Linang, William Hardin, Pemancha Salau, and others.

Therefore our experience and history of party politics is barely 61 years old. During that period too we have had many party upheavals and prominent leaders have broken with the mother party and went their separate ways too many times; no one single party has been spared such debacles — from SUPP to PBB (Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu), SNAP (Sarawak National Party), SCA (Sarawak Chinese Association), to PBDS (Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak) etc. Such disagreements from within each party had resulted in changes of state and federal governments of the day.

Leaders join political parties because they believe in the cause, the policies, and the principles that the individual parties stand for — they remain to fight for its ideals through thick and thin, and stand by and protect its mission and defend its honour and its name. If somehow along the way they lose interest and become disenchanted or no longer believe in its fight, they either withdraw, resign, or retire. They are not supposed to change their minds midstream and jump ship to support another opposing party because they were enticed by monetary rewards. That would make them political prostitutes of the highest order, especially if such moves were to topple the government of the day. In many countries those who take part in such unsuccessful coup d’Γ©tat would face the firing squad. Maybe we should consider doing that here too.

In Sabah on Wednesday night, former chief minister Musa Aman managed to gather together enough state assemblymen from both sides of the political arena to openly challenge the government of Shafie Apdal; who on the rebound had on late Thursday convinced the Sabah TYT to dissolve the state assembly for a new state election to be called as a counter measure to quickly neutralise Musa’s impending coup.

For as long as I have observed Sabah politics, it has always been highly volatile and unpredictable — my friends have termed the state’s political scene as a hellish inferno of a frogs’ paradise since the days of the timber boom of the 1970s, and the heyday of Tun Mustafa and Harris Salleh. On Wednesday night, as the froggies in Sabah held their version of a Sotheby’s auction, figures from between RM10 million to a wild and unimaginable one of RM32 million were bandied about. It seemed to me that the price of betrayal has increased by leaps and bounds since the million or two in James Bond’s briefcases of the 1970s.

Be it RM10 million or RM32 million to buy a political opponent’s change of heart and for him to be termed and regarded as a traitor, a turncoat and a frog for the rest of his life – I just wonder how any such person can live with such a stigma and Damocles’ sword hanging over him from now till his end days. How will it affect his family name, his family members and friends, and how does he sleep at night? Can one’s honour, integrity, and the value of one’s lifework be so easily purchased for any sum of cash or other material gains, as in positions and opportunities? Is this what life is all about? Can one simply not care that he’s still got to go on making a living and going about on his day to day business after the event is over?

I suppose there lies the difference between such people and the rest of us mere mortals.

“As I have said, the first thing is to be honest with yourself. You can never have an impact on society if you have not changed yourself. Great peacemakers are all people of integrity, of honesty, but humility.” — Nelson Mandela

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry (MOH) has conducted Covid-19 screening on 262 PUI (patients under investigation) in the Sivagangga Cluster and to date, eight were tested positive, Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said.

“Of the total number of positive cases, five are non-citizens,” he said in a statement today.

“A total of 251 individuals were found negative while three others are awaiting test results. Active case detection is still ongoing,” he added.

Meanwhile, in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration, Dr Noor Hisham advised Muslims performing the sacrificial ritual to continue adhering to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) as set by the government.

“The use of face masks is highly recommended in crowded and confined places, especially when physical distancing is difficult.

“Maintain personal hygiene, especially hand hygiene by regularly washing your hands with water and soap, when serving and preparing food for the Hari Raya festivity,” he said.

He said it is the hope of all frontliners that the community could play their part in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Hopefully with the new normal, we will together be able to curb the spread of Covid-19 in Malaysia during and after the festive season,” he said while expressing his appreciation to all frontline workers committed to providing services during the festive period. – Bernama

MBKS: Stutong Market to reopen on Aug 2

Shoppers are seen registering before entering the market in this file photo, before the market was closed after two Covid-19 cases were traced there.

KUCHING: The Stutong Market at Tabuan Jaya here will reopen to the public starting August 2 (Sunday), said Kuching South City Council (MBKS).

According to MBKS in a statement today, the council alongside the Fire and Rescue Department (JPBN) will be carrying out disinfection and sanitising works there the day before (Aug 1) at 2pm.

This effort, it added, was one of the many measures taken to curb the spread of Covid-19 before the market’s reopening.

“MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng would like to remind businesses to please strictly adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“For the public, always look after your personal hygiene, wear masks when you are out in public; wash hands or use hand sanitisers; practice social distancing and avoid crowded places whenever possible,” the statement said.

On July 18, the Stutong Market was temporarily closed with immediate effect after two positive cases were identified there.

When contacted by The Borneo Post, Wee said all of the hawkers there were told to go to Petra Jaya Health Clinic for Covid-19 screening, adding that over 200 people working there were also instructed to undergo the test.

Yesterday, Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said there were 10 clusters that were still active, but without any additional cases.

This includes the Stutong Market cluster with seven cases, Engineering Firm Cluster (8), Mambong Cluster (7), Medical Centre Cluster (3), Jupiter Cluster (3), Kuching Jetty Cluster (2), Sentosa Cluster (31), Melbourne Cluster (3), Kuching Construction Company Cluster (2) and Satok Market Cluster (4).

Political analysts: Sabah snap polls won’t have an effect on next Sarawak state election

(From left) Dr Arnold Puyok, Prof Dr Jayum Jawan and Assoc Prof Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi.

KUCHING: The Sabah snap elections will not have any bearing on the next Sarawak state election, said political scientist Prof Dr Jayum Jawan.

He opined that Sarawak has political stability while Sabah does not.

“No, it won’t have any bearing on Sarawak’s next election. The state government of Sabah was formed based on no majority because small parties came together and commanded a simple majority.

“In Sarawak, the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is a dominant ruling party, with a huge majority. There is no political instability in Sarawak unlike the Federal ruling coalition Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Sabah,” he told The Borneo Post.

Political analyst and senior lecturer in Politics and Government Studies Dr Arnold Puyok also was of the opinion that the Sabah election would not have bearing on the next Sarawak state election.

“Probably not so much (impact) because in Sabah you have two very dominant figures competing to be at the helm. There is none in Sarawak yet,” he said.

Another glaring difference between the two states is that there are many parties in Sabah led by popular figures who could emerged as alternatives to existing ones, he said.

“Also unlike Sarawak, Sabah politics is no longer ‘insulated’, it is more open, meaning more exposed to external forces from Semenanjung (Peninsular Malaysia),” he added.

Arnold, who is a Sabahan, also said the Sabah snap elections was a “means to end a political impasse”.

“I do not think it is necessarily good but that could be the only the way to end the turmoil temporarily – it is to make both parties satisfied, hopefully,” he said.

However socio-political analyst Assoc Prof Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi opined that if Shafie wins the Sabah snap elections, the political momentum of Pakatan Harapan (PH) in Sarawak will increase and voters in Sarawak will be open minded or be more ready to accept PH.

Sabah votes are dictated by local issues, ethnicity, regionalism, money politic and culture of defection, he said.

Politics in Sarawak is more or less similar to that in Sabah but defection of elected representatives from one party to another is not a culture or less popular, said Awang Azman who is a university researcher in democracy and elections.

Yesterday (July 30), Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal announced the dissolution of the Sabah state assembly, paving the way for the state election to be held within 60 days, after the Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin consented to his request.

Both Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) and Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) along with its allies from Pakatan Harapan, won 29 seats apiece from the 60-seat State Assembly in the 14th General Election (GE14) on May 9 2018.

The two remaining seats were won by Parti Solidariti Rakyat Sabah (STAR).

However, on May 10, 2018 Sabah BN led by Tan Sri Musa Aman received the support of the two STAR assemblymen, thus obtaining a simple majority with 31 votes that allowed BN to form the government.

United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (UPKO) then announced its withdrawal from BN but four UPKO assemblymen remained in support of Musa as chief minister.

Musa was sworn in as Sabah Chief Minister on May 11, 2018.

Six BN assemblymen subsequently left BN and joined Warisan, supporting Shafie who is Warisan president as chief minister.

Shafie was sworn in as the Sabah Chief Minister, 48 hours after Musa was sworn into office.

On May 13, 2018 the Istana Negeri of Sabah declared that Musa was no longer Sabah Chief Minister and on
May 16, 2018 Shafie announced his State Cabinet lineup with the inclusion of two nominated assemblymen, Tuaran MP Datuk Wilfred Madius Tangau, who is also UPKO president, and former Sandakan MP, the late Datuk Stephen Wong, who was the then Sabah DAP chairman.

Musa went on to take legal actio and on May 17, 2018 filed a writ requesting the court to declare him as the legitimate chief minister.

To strengthen his position last year, Shafie went on to nominate cabinet members Warisan secretary-general Loretto Padua Jr and treasurer Terence Siambun as well as Libaran PKR division chief Jaffari Waliam.

On Nov 7, 2018 the Kota Kinabalu High Court ruled that Shafie’s appointment as the new Sabah Chief Minister was in accordance with the Constitution, and is therefore the State’s rightful leader.

On Nov 29, 2019 the Kota Kinabalu Court of Appeals upheld the High Court’s decision and dismissed with costs Musa’s appeal.

After he was acquitted in June this year from all 46 criminal charges against him involving corruption and money laundering relating to timber concessions, Musa claimed to have obtained a simple majority to form the new state government through a coalition of several parties in the State.

KUCHING: All international mail, parcel and Express Mail Service (EMS) will be suspended to all destinations except Singapore, effective Aug 3, announced Pos Malaysia today.

The country’s largest network courier said the temporary service suspension was due to the restrictions and inconvenience as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Pos Malaysias international mail, parcel and Express Mail Service (EMS) will be suspended to all international destinations except Singapore beginning 3 August 2020 until further notice.

“The temporary service suspension is due to service impacts related to Covid-19, which include varying levels of restrictions across destination countries on flights, airport closures and cross border services,” said the Pos Malaysia statement.

The postal delivery service firm said updates will be available from time to time on its website and official social media platforms.

In another statement, Pos Malaysia announced that its business operations would be taking a break for Hari Raya Aidiladha from today until Aug 2 for all states across the nation.

Police to mount roadblocks at Simunjan, Sri Aman during inter-zone travel restriction – Dev

Bernama file photo for illustration purposes

KUCHING: The Sarawak police will be mounting roadblocks at Simunjan and Sri Aman starting 12.01am on Aug 1 to restrict inter-zone movements as part of the state’s initiative to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Zone 1 consists of Kuching, Serian and Samarahan divisions, which are classified as Yellow Zones, while Zone 2 consists of Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Kapit, Mukah, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang divisions which are Green Zones.

Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner Dato Dev Kumar in a statement said the inter-zone travel restriction would begin from Aug 1 till Aug 14.

“The public are not allowed to travel between Zone 1 and Zone 2 or vice versa starting Aug 1 without a police permit,” said Dev.

He added that those who are travelling within the same zone such as Kuching, Padawan, Kota Samarahan, Simunjan, Serian, Bau and Lundu would not require a police permit.

“Travelling to Sri Aman from Simunjan via the Triso ferry and Jalan Serian – Sri Aman are also not allowed,” he added.

Exceptions for the inter-zone travel restriction are only for those who are on official government duties, essential services, tending to the death of immediate family members, tending to critically ill immediate family members, and those who require medical attention or checkups.

Government servants who need to travel for official duties are required to produce a letter from their head of department while those in the service sector are required to produce letters from their companies.

He added that if a person needs to tend to the death or a critically ill immediate family member, a police permit needs to be shown to the police personnel at the roadblock.

“This permits can be applied at any nearby police stations,” he added.

The same permit is also needed to travel via domestic airline, express boats, stage bus services and regional bus services between Zone 1 and Zone 2.

He added that if a ticket is already purchased for the said travel mode, the passenger should immediately go to the nearest police station to apply for the permit.

“Without the police permit, a passenger is not allowed to board the plane, boat or bus,” said Dev.

Dr Yii: Findings, results made by MA63 special committee should be made public

Dr Kelvin Yii. – File photo

KUCHING: The results and findings made by the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) cabinet special committee in reviewing MA63’s implementation should be revealed to the public, opined Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii.

He said that such findings should not be kept secret as it could give the impression that it was only a negotiation between “elites”, even though the matter concerned the people of Sarawak and Sabah.

“Such findings should not be kept secret, giving an impression that it is only a negotiation between elites without taking into the consultation of the public affected by it,” Dr Yii said, adding that the matters concerned the people of Sarawak and Sabah.

He added that keeping the final report from the public would only reinforce the impression that the current Perikatan Nasional (PN) government had no intention of implementing what was agreed before.

Under the previous Pakatan Harapan (PH) federal government, Dr Yii said that a cabinet special committee on MA63 was formed, comprising of the Prime Minister, cabinet ministers, chief ministers, legal experts, academicians and activists, to discuss and find ways forward to restore the rights enshrined under the agreement that had eroded over the years.

“This was a high-level committee with diverse backgrounds and also high-level representatives from both political divides,” he said.

Through the discussions, Dr Yii said 17 out of 21 issues had already been resolved by the PH government and the other four – concerning oil royalties and ownership – would be further discussed by the prime minister and the two chief ministers.

“That shows progress as the efforts to restore our rights has to go through many different legal amendments and policy changes, as such erosion of rights happened over a long period of time under the previous Barisan Nasional administration,” he said.

Dr Yii said it had been PH’s every intention to reveal the findings to the public and even table it in Parliament to be debated, as it concerned the rights and the future of all parties under the Federation of Malaysia.

“So, I urge the PN government to reveal all the findings and negotiations done in a transparent and accountable manner,” he stated.

Dr Yii remarked what happened in 1974 and 1976 where decisions that affect the two territories of Sabah and Sarawak were made only by the elites without proper consultations must not be repeated, especially when it had a direct effect on the future of the Borneo states.

“We came together to form Malaysia and without one another, there won’t be any Malaysia. In that spirit of cooperation, there also must be greater transparency and accountability among all partners,” said Dr Yii.

Catholic Church services suspended temporarily as Kuching slips back into Covid-19 red zone

All daily, Sunday masses and services in parishes in the red zone will be temporarily suspended until further notice. File Photo

KUCHING: With Kuching reclassified as a Covid-19 red zone, the Catholic Archdiocese here has announced that all daily, Sunday masses and services in parishes in the red zone will be temporarily suspended effective today (July 31).

In a statement yesterday, Archbishop Simon Poh said this affects parish communities in Kuching, Kota Sentosa, Kota Samarahan and Kota Padawan.

He added that parish churches in the yellow and green zone will remain open for Sunday masses and services and all parish offices will remain open to serve Catholics.

“I exhort everyone to stricty adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) that are currently practiced in all our churches and offices.

“This will ensure our churches are kept safe for public viewing,” he said.

Poh called on to all Catholics to be socially responsible by wearing masks in public, practice proper hand-washing as well as social distancing and to bring along their hand sanitisers and surface disinfectant.

He also appealed to Catholics to take responsibility by donating to the Catholic Welfare Services (CWS) or charities, remain kind and considerate to one another and pray and intercede to society.

“Let us do our part to contain Covid-19 and get out of the red zone so that our churches can resume masses even earlier, especially before the Feast of Assumption weekend on Aug 15,” he added.

On Tuesday, State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas announced that Kuching had reverted back to red zone status, with 21 recorded positive cases out of a total of 25 cases in Sarawak.

He added that Serian and Lundu districts turned from green to yellow zones as the former recorded two cases, while the latter recorded one case.

Aside from Serian and Lundu, Samarahan and Bau districts were also deemed yellow zones – bringing the total number of yellow zones to four.

No new cases were recorded yesterday, with the total number of cases remaining unchanged at 677.

Enrollment of Kuching-based students into matriculation colleges postponed – MOE

Voters must teach defectors a lesson – Christina

Christina (third right) with Poon (on her left), Tan (right), Lasimbang (left) and others during the PH Sabah meeting yesterday.

KOTA KINABALU: Pakatan Harapan Sabah (PH Sabah), comprising PKR, DAP and Amanah, has expressed full support for the leadership of caretaker Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal in leading the Warisan-PH-Upko coalition to victory in the upcoming State Election.

Its chairperson Datuk Christina Liew said she believed the people would continue to support Shafie because they are weary of the political frogging culture in Sabah.

“Such political treachery is disturbing and disrupting the people’s lives. We are grappling with the Covid-19 pandemic which is bad enough for the economy, and yet we have to face another election due to the antics of political frogs.

“We urge the Sabah electorate to totally reject the defectors should the latter be fielded again in the forthcoming State Election. The voters must teach the defectors a lesson for their betrayal of the people’s mandate,” she said during a PH Sabah meeting chaired by her on Thursday afternoon.

On the status of Sabah PKR Vice-Chairman Kenny Chua, among the defectors, Christina, who is also Sabah PKR Chief, said the party’s Disciplinary Committee (headed by Sazalye Donol) has terminated his membership and revoked all his positions in the party with immediate effect.

“As an elected representative, it is unbecoming of him (Chua) to ditch the Warisan-led Government in which he represented the party. He has betrayed the people’s trust and I am sure they would know what to do with him if he contests again,” she said.

Sabah DAP Chairman Datuk Frankie Poon, who concurred with Christina, said it is high time to put a complete stop to the frogging culture among some politicians once and for all.

“I think enough is enough. The people’s interests must transcend the individual YB’s interests. We (elected representatives) are nothing without the people’s support. What some politicians do is always self-interest. Unfortunately, I have to say that,” he said while calling on the people to give overwhelming support to the Warisan-led Coalition.

Amanah Sabah Chairman Lahirul Latigu said the dissolution of the State Assembly was the best solution to the political impasse caused by the defections of elected representatives to Perikatan Nasional (PN) in Sabah.

Speaking in support of Shafie as caretaker CM, he said : “We are going back to the people and seeking a mandate again for support of the Warisan-PH-Upko Coalition. We (Amanah Sabah) will work together with our coalition partners to ensure yet another electoral win.”

Meanwhile, Poon reported that the DAP Disciplinary Committee (led by Chong Chieng Jen) has on Thursday terminated the membership of Nominated Assemblyman Ronnie Loh Ee Eng on the ground of his defection from the party to support Perikatan Nasional (PN) in Sabah with the intent to topple the Sabah State Government.

He said the termination takes immediate effect, and Loh is also removed from all his positions in the party.

“The Disciplinary Committee advises all our members to disassociate themselves from the defector. We believe the Disciplinary Committee will take the sternest action against whoever defects because nothing is more treacherous and worse than a betrayal of the people’s mandate,” Poon added.

Also present were MP for Putatan, Awang Husaini Sahari, Likas Assemblyman Tan Lee Fatt, Senator Adrian Lasimbang and Christina’s Political Secretary Mustapha Sakmud.

    Rice revitalization partnership in Tenghilan

KOTA KINABALU: A partnership between the communities of Kg Lapasan Ulu and Kg Tinuhan in the Tuaran District, the Sabah Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) and Yayasan Hasanah is revitalizing paddy production on almost 50 acres of village lands in the Tenghilan area.

Sabah currently produces only around 25% of the rice it needs.

The project is facilitated by Forever Sabah, in partnership with KampOng Campus for Ecoliteracy & Change, a learning centre based in this area that shares useful knowledge of the head, heart and hands from around Sabah, the region and the world.

Forever Sabah has brought in Maria Lasimbang from Kivatu Nature Farm, the well-known organic farming training centre in Penampang to help train the villagers in the latest environmentally friendly techniques, and community representatives visited Kg Tambatuon in the Mt Kinabalu foothills of Kota Belud to see the more climate-friendly Sustainable Rice Intensification System (SRI) in action.

Faced with the MCO, and concerned for their livelihoods and staple food, 43 families came forward in June to restore their tradition as rice farmers on family and community lands.  Clearing lands left unused for many years has taken hard work and “gotong royong”.

“It is important that a new generation gets interested and sees benefits from producing rice while our elders are still there to teach us the tradition along with innovations. “Covid-19 prevented us earning money and reminded us of the need and opportunity to return to growing our own rice,” said Betroychiper Hongsui @Chiper, the project coordinator from Kg Lapasan Ulu.

“We are now planting 22 delicious traditional varieties of rice sourced from our own and other villages in neighbouring districts,” added Linah Masud (field coordinator). These local rice have special taste, cooking and nutritional qualities that can earn over RM10/kg in premier markets, which is over five times the floor price in Malaysia.

DID Sabah quickly and effectively stepped forward to restore irrigation canals and drains in the two villages, in time to manage the rains for the field preparation processes.

Daimon Bin Rotop as chairman of the Kg Tinuhan committee said: “On behalf of my community, I want to thank the staff from DID headquarters and Tuaran branch for coming to our villages upon the invitation of Forever Sabah, for jointly inspecting the needed work with us and for completing this important project so quickly so that we can start planting with the new rains”.

“The exposure that I got from the project’s new planting method of SRI is great,” said Samis Enggang, a local farmer from Kg Tinuhan. “It has gotten me interested with the use of organic fertilizers, which is favourable for the health and good for soil care as well.”

Another participant of the project, George Apuk, said, “After six years of not working in the field, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for this project as it is igniting and reviving the will of the farmers who have not planted paddy for a long time.”

Learning of the initiative, Sapulut Forest Development in Kalabakan, generously donated three bundles of fence poles to assist control of buffaloes, which roam freely in the area damaging fields and crops.  Other collaborators are Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture and PACOS Trust’s School of Experiential and Entrepreneurial Development Sabah (SEEDS).

Cynthia Ong, Chief Executive Facilitator of Forever Sabah, reflected: “This project emerged from the depths of lockdown, and the concern about communities and their access to basic food needs.

“The idea was seeded in conversation with a few community members and took root overnight as the community gathered enthusiastically around it.  Old plots were outlined using satellite imagery, old drainage and irrigation systems retraced, land preparation requirements studied, village committees organised, and it quickly became apparent that this was something that wanted to happen.”

I will be back stronger – Phoong

    Phoong

KOTA KINABALU: Former Luyang assemblyman Ginger Phoong expressed his disappointment on the current political upheaval.

However, he vowed to remain faithful to his constituents and continue serving the people, if he were given the mandate once more.

In a Facebook post yesterday, Phoong candidly captured his sentiment on the matter and sought the support of the people so that he may continue to contribute to the development of Luyang.

“Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Shafie Apdal had an audience with Head of State Tun Datuk Seri Panglima Juhar Mahiruddin last night. His excellency has granted and agreed to dissolve the State Assembly to return the people’s mandate to their original owners.

“I feel deeply disappointed and sad that the people’s mandate is betrayed once again in Sabah. However, we should not give up and learn from this time. We shall cast our votes and sweep all these traitors out once and for all.

“The Sabah state government led by Warisan, Pakatan Harapan and UPKO has been working hard to revive the state economy, despite the federal government being uncooperative. We did our best to assist the people to get through this pandemic. We understand that everyone is suffering, yet today we see these shameless attempts to topple the government.

“Today, with the State Assembly dissolved, we will again seek the mandate from the people. I humbly ask for your mandate again to continue to serve for my people of Luyang. I hope that you will cast your votes once again to send me into the State Assembly.

“I don’t know whether or not we will become the government again, but I will never betray my constituents even if I fall to the opposition bench. If that’s the choice of Sabahans, I will stand in the opposition bench with pride and principles. Up or down, I will stand firm and consistently serve my people in Luyang.

“As a young politician, I did not join politics for wealth and self benefits. I have always been inspired to serve the people and I have always upheld my principle that politics should be a method to improve the lives of the people, and not politicians,” he wrote.

Phoong went on to say his 26 months in office was “a great journey and honour,” and that his homeland had always been his motivation to work harder to ensure that the people’s living would be improved. He was sure that people felt changes were being realised.

Phoong vowed to continue the battle for a better Sabah and Malaysia in the upcoming election, to usher in new politics in Sabah and become the role model to the whole of Malaysia and the world.

“Thank you to my beloved home, Luyang. I will be back, stronger than ever,” he ended his post.
