Need For Speed: Payback Headlines October’s Free Games For PlayStation Plus Subscribers

Sony Interactive Entertainment is a little late this month in announcing its free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers. But better late than never, and now we know that we’ll be getting Need for Speed: Payback and Vampyr.

The first game should need no introduction. First released back in 2017, Need for Speed: Payback was one of the better looking games of the series. But unfortunately, it was chock full of mictrotransactions and even the upgrade system was a mess of randomised lootbox rolls. Now that it’s free it’s probably the best time to pick the game up, provided you don’t start spending on its microtransactions.

Vampyr, on the other hand, is a much more straighforward action RPG experience. You play as a Jonathan Reid, a doctor who is also a vampire. The story takes place in four fictional districts of London, during the era of the Spanish Flu. The premise is certainly more interesting, but whether or not the story execution is, well, your mileage may vary.

Both titles will be available for download between 6 October to 2 November. If you’ve not downloaded last month’s free PlayStation Plus games yet, now’s as good a time as any to do so.

Answering techniques – the missing piece to scoring in SPM

This article is part of Uni Enrol’s SPM Masterclass to be held in November 2020. Register now at unienrol.com/spm-masterclass

There is an often-neglected method that impedes students from excelling in their examinations. While it may sound simple, having a sound understanding of answering techniques is the edge that divides good students from excellent ones.

So what are answering techniques? This method is about understanding how students can maximise their scores when providing answers that adhere to the right format, terminologies, steps and optimal way of answering that checks all the things examiners look for. That is why even if you answered correctly you MAY NOT get full marks. Experienced teachers are more familiar with these SPM examination requirements.

    Right format for free marks

By just adhering to the correct format requirements, students can pick up marks that an examination scheme has allocated for. For example, in the formal letter section for the English examination, writing dates in full like 27 September 2020 will give students one mark, instead of writing 27/9/2020 which carries zero marks.

For subjects such as Chemistry or Physics, answering in a different unit from the stated, although correctly converted, will still cause students to lose marks, for example giving in kg instead of gram.

    Easily scoring marks

For subjects such as Accounting and Mathematics, marks are given when students can show the correct steps even if the answers are incorrect.

In Accounting, just by moving figures provided in the question to the correct account set-up such as capital account or realised profit and loss account, students will already gain, for example, four out of 20 marks easily. Examinations do provide easy-to-collect marks to reward the student’s understanding of basic concepts.

    Get noticed by examiners

For essay or structured questions especially in Bahasa Malaysia, English and Sejarah, it is best to separate different points given into separate paragraphs so that examiners can easily distinguish where they should be marking and awarding marks. Examiners go through hundreds of papers and may easily overlook due to an untidy presentation.

    Watching for clues

Read questions carefully to look for keywords that serve as clues to answers. For example, if a Physics question states that a ship is floating, it is a clue which tells students that the buoyant force of the water is the same as the weight of the ship and is crucial to solving the question.

Be alert on marks allocation as it is also an indication of how much students need to provide. If a question carries six marks but asks students to provide only two points, it means that examiners expect further explanation, elaboration or examples to each point given.

    Teachers’ proprietary formula

In the SPM Masterclass, experienced teachers will also share their answering formulas so students can provide optimal answers.

For example, teacher Haslindar Nor Ismail’s BASuH method (Baca, Analisis, Subjek, Huraian) is a step-by-step method to tackle KBAT (

Kemahiran Berfikir Aras Tinggi) questions in a consistent manner and getting full marks. Watch her trial class videos in Uni Enrol’s Youtube channel and also join the Masterclass to learn more.

Teacher Nurshashimah Nawawi will share her FHC (Fakta, Huraian, Contoh) method to answer Sejarah KBAT questions. Every fact, elaboration and example given carries marks even though questions do not explicitly instruct students to provide.

The SPM Masterclass is designed to cover answering techniques, past year examination analysis and discussion of popular and challenging topics by experienced teachers.

Go to unienrol.com/spm-masterclass to quickly sign up as seats are limited or call 03-5613 7225, Monday to Friday, between 9.30am and 6pm.

Google Introduces A Revamped Editor To Its Dedicated Photos App

Google has officially introduced a new editor via its Photos app for Android. With this implementation, users are enabled to easily edit their photos thanks to the provided smart suggestions and granular adjustments which Google claims will help enhance the look of your edited images.

The Google Photos app is now equipped with a brand new tab within the editor which will smartly suggest the right filters for users to apply to their images. The suggestions that are provided by Google will easily allow users to automatically adjust the brightness, contrast and portrait effects by tapping on the already pre-installed Color Pop and Enhance filters.

Apart from this, if you wish to manually edit your photos and ditch the pre-installed filters altogether, the new layout within the Photos app will allow you to have that privilege by manually adjusting the level of brightness, contrast, saturation, warmth, among many other options available within the app itself.

Specifically catered for Google’s own Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 devices, the company is offering a new Portrait Light feature which will take advantage of Google’s machine learning technology to offer more image editing feature for its users. Among those features include the ability to adjust the light position and brightness after a photo has been captured even on non-Portrait mode.

The revamped Google Photos editor has already been rolled out starting today. At the time of writing, Google has not announced any plans of introducing this feature for iOS devices anytime soon. However, if you are an Android device user, go ahead and try this feature now.

Masing calls out Soon Koh on rural infrastructure development

A stretch of Ng Sepanggil-Tunoh (access road to Tunoh) currently under construction.

KUCHING (Oct 1): Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing has taken Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh to task over his comments on the infrastructure development in Baleh and Tunoh.

“The Ng Mujong and Ng Sepanggil-Tunoh roads are currently under construction, hence the poor condition is a normal and necessary part of a situation,” said Masing, who is also the Minister of Infrastructure and Ports Development, in a statement today.

On Wednesday, Wong had criticised the condition of the roads in Baleh where Masing is assemblyman, adding that infrastructure development in the rural areas was lacking.

The PSB president had claimed that he had driven from Kapit to Tunoh in Baleh last week, and though the distance was only about 83km, it took him almost four hours. He added that the road was treacherous.

Refuting the PSB president’s allegation that he had failed to bring infrastructure development to his constituency, Masing said nearly RM3 billion had been allocated for infrastructure development in Baleh comprising five road projects.

Masing said the 73-km Ng Mujong Road, which is the access road to the proposed Baleh Dam, at RM1.2 billion and Ng Sepanggil-Tunoh, the access road to Tunoh, at RM600 million were under construction.

According to him, the construction of the Rh Nyamok/Ng Serau/Ng Gaat/SMK Baleh/Sg Kain road at RM380 million, to be carried out in two phases, will begin at the end of this year.

Masing said the road to Tunoh (Ng Mujong/Ng Tiau/Tunoh) estimated at RM550 million had been approved for implementation under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP).

“Batang Baleh bridge, Sg Mujong bridge and Sg Banyau bridge have been completed at a cost of RM123 million. Meanwhile, the RM3.9 million Sg Merirai bridge is under construction,” he added.

Pointing out that the facts “speak for themselves”, Masing said he had succeeded in bringing billions of ringgit in infrastructure development to Baleh, which is also a testimony to the earnest efforts of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government in developing rural areas.

He said Wong had boasted of building roads to all longhouses within his Bawang Assan constituency but denigrated the achievements in Baleh.

By so doing, he said Wong had disclosed his real motive for the personal attack on him.

“He is portraying himself as the better leader over his opponent. If indeed Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has succeeded in building roads to all longhouses within Bawang Assan, he did only what was expected of him as he was the infrastructure development and transportation minister for eight years from 1996 to 2004.”

He alleged that Wong had failed to develop any rural road within the Bawang Assan constituency during his tenure as the minister of infrastructure and transportation.

Masing said only four years after he was appointed as the Minister of Infrastructure and Ports Development that the Sg Bidut/Kpg Tutus/Kpg Sebedil/Kpg Bungan road within Bawang Assan was approved, and was currently under construction.

He noted that Wong also questioned the state government’s decision to build an airport in Tunoh given that this area is underdeveloped.

“In questioning the Sarawak government’s decision to build the airport in Tunoh, Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has lent further credence to the view that he opposes development to the rural areas.

“For someone who relies on rural constituents for support, Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has shown himself to be self-contradictory,” asserted Masing.

At the launch of the 17th annual general meeting of Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching on April 25 last year,

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg had announced the Tunoh airport on April 25 last year, as part of a long-term development plan for the area.

FGV protests US import ban over alleged forced labour

Foto for illustration. — AFP photo

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 1): FGV Holdings Berhad has expressed its disappointment in the United States’ Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) agency for blocking the import of its palm oil and palm oil products on grounds of alleged forced labour.

It said steps have been taken to demonstrate FGV’s commitment to respect human rights and to uphold labour standards in the past several years which the company, one of the world’s largest palm oil producers, said is well-documented and in the public domain.

“FGV would like to emphasise that all issues raised have been the subject of public discourse since 2015 and FGV has taken several steps to correct the situation,” it said in a statement.

Since August 2019, FGV has been communicating with the USCBP through its legal counsel since August 2019, and has submitted evidence of compliance of labour standards as committed by FGV.

“We will continue to engage with the USCBP to clear FGV’s name, and are determined to see through its commitment to respect human rights and uphold labour standards,” it said.

FGV cited several examples of the steps it has taken, such as the strengthening of its procedures and processes in the recruitment of migrant workers by establishing four One-Stop Centres in Malaysia and in source countries including India and Indonesia.

“This is part of our efforts to strengthen the pre-departure and post-arrival orientation programmes for our migrant workers. Through these orientation sessions our migrant workers are briefed on various matters including the terms of their employment, job scope and nature of work, rights and responsibilities, as well as benefits and entitlements.

“FGV has also adopted its Guidelines and Procedures for the Responsible Recruitment of Migrant Workers in 2019 in accordance with international standards and will continue to strengthen the document. FGV is committed to paying official costs associated with the recruitment of migrant workers, which include airfare and costs for work permit, visa, medical check-up and insurance, and has also revised its contract with recruitment agencies to require them to ensure that no fees are charged on the workers,” it said.

The company denied involvement in any recruitment or employment of refugees, adding that as of 2020, it recruits migrant workers mainly from India and Indonesia through legal channels and processes recognised and approved by the Malaysian authorities and the source countries.

“As of August, FGV has 11,286 Indonesian workers and 4,683 Indian workers, who together, form the majority of its plantation workforce. Furthermore, FGV does not hire contract workers and all workers are employed directly by us.

“FGV is also pioneering the implementation of the electronic wallet cashless payroll system for its plantation workers. The system acts as a more convenient and efficient way for workers to manage their finances and was successfully rolled out on February in Gua Musang, Kelantan, involving 1,500 registered users in 11 of its estates. By the first quarter of 2021, FGV aims to implement this system for its entire plantation sector, including estates in Sabah and Sarawak,” it said.

The company also does not retain the passports of its workers, and instead has installed a total of 32,250 safety boxes throughout all its 68 complexes, as an option for migrant workers to keep their passports safely.

“In fulfilling the rights of workers to adequate housing, FGV has invested approximately RM350 million to upgrade housing facilities for its workers over the past three years, by constructing new residences in our plantations all over the country. Similarly, FGV respects workers’ right to healthcare through the benefits provided, which cover annual expenses for outpatient care and an unlimited allocation for inpatient treatment.

“Mindful of fulfilling human rights and sustainability standards throughout our supply chain, FGV has adopted a Supplier Code of Conduct outlining the principles and standards relating to sustainability; business ethics and integrity; safety, health and environment; and labour, with which our suppliers and vendors are required to comply,” it said.

Any supplier or vendor that is found to not be in compliance with the code will be subjected to FGV’s Supplier Delinquency Guidelines, with the possibility of being suspended or terminated and blacklisted should they fail to demonstrate willingness to rectify gaps in their practices.

“It is worth reiterating that FGV does not tolerate any form of human rights infringements or criminal offense in its operations, and pays serious attention to any allegation of physical or sexual violence as well as intimidation or threats. As a responsible company any case of such nature will be acted upon by FGV including by reporting them to the relevant authorities.

“Recognising that respecting human rights is a continuous endeavour, FGV became a participating company of the Fair Labor Association (FLA) and is currently implementing a long-term and comprehensive action plan under its affiliation to the FLA that comprises a number of initiatives to further strengthen various aspects of our labour practices such as our recruitment process, human rights training programmes, working and living conditions, as well as grievance mechanisms, among others,” it said.

The company’s action plan for 2020 was adopted on March 31 in consultation with the FLA and with various other stakeholders including civil society organisations, at a time when the Covid-19 situation was rapidly worsening both in Malaysia and globally.

“Despite the unprecedented challenges posed by the pandemic, which forced FGV to realign its priorities to ensure that necessary measures are taken to curb and combat the spread of Covid-19, we remained committed to implementing the action plan and believe that concrete progress has been made in the six months of implementation beginning April 2020.

“FGV’s affiliation to the FLA is subject to a rigorous validation exercise and public reporting. FLA’s report on FGV’s progress on the implementation of the action plan is published on FLA’s website,” it said.

In a statement, the USCBP said shipments from FGV and its subsidiaries will be held back at all ports of entry into the United States, effective Wednesday.

The agency has stated the order was issued based on information that “reasonably indicates” the use of forced labour, following investigations lasting over a year that indicated human rights abuses such as deception, isolation, physical and sexual violence, intimidation, movement restriction, among others. – Malay Mail

The sultanate’s Prime Minister’s Department in a statement issued on Sept 30 said that a copy of the test result must be submitted to the Immigration and National Registration Department at the border posts.

“Negative test results can be used within seven days from the date the test is taken. This is applicable for every entry of foreign nationals including transit passengers and drivers as well as passengers of commercial vehicles (Transport Operators),” it said.

Google TV Is The New Interface For Android TVs

If you’re subscribed to a lot of streaming services like Netflix and others like it, you’ve probably faced the issue of switching between apps to watch shows exclusive to either service. It’s by no means a chore, but you’ve probably had the feeling that it should be simpler. Google has just announced Google TV, a smart TV interface that looks to make just that happen.

Potentially confusing name aside, Google TV works the way the Google Assistant works on the phone. Ask it to find your favourite shows, and it brings it up for you regardless of which subscription service it belongs to. If you have smart home devices like a security camera, you can control them from here too.

Of course, Google TV is not to be confused with Android TV, the actual operating system for smart TVs. To make matters even more confusing, Google also announced that it will be replacing the Google Play Movies & TV app on mobile devices to Google TV as well.

For now, it looks like it will take awhile before we can make use of this. It will first be available on the new Chromecast with Google TV. The app mentioned earlier will also be updated to the new name starting with Android devices. But naturally, this will happen in the US first, with other countries being later in the queue. And finally, the new interface will be made available on TVs by Android TV partners like Sony starting in 2021.

For Malaysia, Opensignal published such report twice per year and the second edition for 2020 has just been released yesterday.

Once again, Maxis and Celcom dominate the winner’s list. However, given the recent COVID-19 outbreak which has put additional strain on the country’s network, there are more to the story than just keeping track of bragging rights that local telcos can claim against each other.

Nevertheless, let’s start with the results. In the September 2020 report, Maxis has been declared as the best telco for Video Experience, Games Experience, and Download Speed Experience which is something that telco has won in the first rendition of the 2020 Opensignal Mobile Experience Awards for Malaysia back in April.

Interesting enough, U Mobile has managed to snatch the Upload Speed Experience award from Maxis in this round. The telco has also sneaked into the Voice App Experience category as its joint winner alongside unifi who has won it in April.

Just like earlier this year, Celcom once again took 4G Availability and 4G Coverage Experience under its wings for the September edition of 2020 Opensignal Mobile Experience Awards for Malaysia. Meanwhile, Opensignal has omitted Latency Experience award for this edition though as this category has been discontinued in May 2020.

Winners aside, if you take a closer look at the numbers for each category and compare them to the April report, you would notice that the performances for almost all telcos in Malaysia have dropped.

For example, the average download speed for Maxis has dropped from 20.4Mbps to 14.5Mbps which is a decline of around 29% even though it is still leading the market. The telco’s upload speed has also dropped at around 26% rate, from 7.7Mbps to 5.7Mbps.

Another market leader, Celcom also experienced around 20% drop in average download speed which allows Digi to edge the telco in this category although with a very tiny margin. Similarly, the telco has also experienced around 22% drop in average upload speed.

As far as average download and upload speed are concerned, somehow U Mobile showed an improvement of 36% and 8%, respectively. Meanwhile, nothing much has changed for unifi which is the smallest telcos by subscribers’ size among the five listed here.

Another interesting statistic that Opensignal’s September report has revealed is the significant decline in terms of gaming experience among all five telcos. According to their scores, all of them have received the Poor rating which is far off from the Average to Good classifications that they received back in the April’s report.

As pointed out earlier, the noticeable decline in performance among Malaysian telcos is likely to do with increased usage during the peak of COVID-19 outbreak. However, things are already recovering according to Opensignal which means the next report should look much better.

Brunei starts imposing exit, entry charge on travellers at border posts

Brunei is imposing an exit and entry charge of RM9 every time a traveller passes through its border posts.

MIRI (Oct 1): Brunei’s Caj Perkhidmatan (CaP) or exit and entry charges order for all citizens, residents, and foreigners travelling through its border posts by land has taken effect today.

The CaP was supposed to be implemented on August 1 but was held back due to negotiations and discussions between the sultanate and the Malaysian government.

The sultanate’s Finance and Economy Ministry said in a statement yesterday that from today all travellers through land control posts or checkpoints will pay an exit and entry charge of BN$3 (RM9.09) per person for a one-way trip.

“For example, for a return trip to Miri, Sarawak, one will be charged BND6 (RM18.18),” it said.

However, it pointed out that CaP exemption were given to several categories such as the Government Officers of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in carrying out official duties on behalf of the Government; Children aged two and below; The consular officers and staff specified in Article 1 in the First Schedule to the Consular Relations Act (Chapter 118) and his family members, diplomatic agent specified in Schedule to the Diplomatic Privileges (Vienna Convention) Act (Chapter 117)..

The statement added that those who want to exit or enter the country through its land control post must make an application through the Exit and Entry System (EES) of the Royal Customs and Excise department which can be accessed through https://bit.ly/2Gtyv0z.

Payment for the CaP, it said, can be made online.

Google Officially Launches Pixel 5; Marks The Arrival of 5G Into The Family

At the very long last, Google has officially launched the newest family member of its Pixel phone family, the Pixel 5. Just like what the company promised back in August, the launch event last night also saw the official launch of Pixel 4a 5G.

Equipped with a 6-inch Full HD+ Flexible OLED display, the screen also has what Google referred to as Smooth Display which essentially offers an adaptive refresh rate of up to 90Hz. The IPX8-rated phone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor alongside 8GB of RAM and 128GB internal storage.

In terms of photography hardware, the Pixel 5 carries a 12.2MP autofocus dual-pixel phase detection camera together with another 16MP camera on its back. For selfies, Google has provided an 8MP fixed focus camera on the top left corner part of phone’s screen.

A 4080mAh battery completes Pixel 5’s basics specs which also supports 18W fast chargers as well as 12W wireless charging. The phone also has reverse wireless charging capability which allows the phone to act a Qi-based power bank.

Meanwhile, the new Pixel 4a 5G seems to have more in common to Pixel 5 rather than the actual Pixel 4a. Alongside the 5G connectivity, the phone has the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor alongside the 12MP dual-pixel and 16MP ultrawide camera setup on its back as well as 8MP selfie camera and 128GB internal storage

Google somehow decided to equipped Pixel 4a 5G with a larger 6.2-inch Full HD OLED display although it doesn’t come with 90Hz adaptive refresh rate as per Pixel 5. This phone also has a smaller battery capacity at 3885mAh and doesn’t come with wireless charging capability but still supports 18W fast charger.

Pricewise, Pixel 5 is listed at USD 699 (~RM 2,899) while the Pixel 4a 5G goes for USD 499 (~RM 2,069). While none of these phones will be officially available in Malaysia, we pretty sure your favourite parallel importers already standing by for your call if you can’t contain yourself from wanting any of these new Pixel phones badly.

1MDB: Asset recovery requires foreign cooperation – Azam Baki

    Azam Baki

PUTRAJAYA: Asset recovery under the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case requires a lot of cooperation and coordination from foreign countries, says Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Datuk Seri Azam Baki.

He said, as such, there was still a long way to complete investigations into the case.

“What can I say so far, the MACC is working with other agencies to recover the people’s money that has been misappropriated abroad.

“The MACC is working with various countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Singapore,” he said in a special interview with Bernama in conjunction with MACC’s 53rd anniversary, which falls tomorrow.

Azam said the MACC was taking proactive measures to track 1MDB assets and recover them, adding that he could not comment further on the case as it could affect the investigation and ongoing trial.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin previously said the government was committed to continuing efforts to recover 1MDB-related assets as well as prosecute individuals and parties involved in the scandal. — Bernama

Immigration Department takes proactive steps in curbing Covid-19

Security at the country’s borders are under control with the regular monitoring activities carried out by the three wings of the MAF, the police, the MMEA and the Immigration Department.

RAUB: The Immigration Department has taken the initiative to curb the spread of Covid-19 by using National Service Training Programme (PLKN) and Bina Negara camps as detention placement for illegal immigrants, said director-general Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud.

He said the department had been renting PLKN camps in Beranang, Selangor and Wawasan Negara Camp in Langkawi, Kedah as the detention depots could no longer accommodate the increasing number of illegal immigrants.

“We are also planning to rent another camp in Penang to accommodate more detainees. We can still  manage the number because apart from these camps we have been deporting about 200 illegal immigrants in a week,” he said after participating in Ops Durian at Sungai Ruan here today.

As of Monday, a total of 26,335 illegal immigrants have been deported with Indonesians recording the highest number at 11,747, followed by Bangladesh (3,788) and Thailand (2,001).

He added that the department had also been segregating the new and old arrivals at the detention depots as recommended by the Health Ministry, in an effort to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Meanwhile, Khairul Dzaimee said from Jan 1 until Monday, the department had detained 20,169 illegals and 313 employers through 5,479 operations carried out nationwide.

Kuala Lumpur has the highest concentration of illegal immigrants with 3,422 people, Sarawak (2,741), Putrajaya (2,230) and Sabah (1,170) while Labuan has lowest number with only 85 people. — Bernama
