During the earlier phase of Movement Control Order (MCO), Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) was not able to perform meter reading and physical bill delivery at customers premise due to health and safety factor concerning the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, customers’ bills during the MCO period was based on the consumption figure that appeared inside their last bill before MCO started.
TNB has since resumed meter reading and physical bill delivery starting from 15 May onwards. Hence, the company is now in the process of adjusting customers bill according to the actual figure from the power meter.
This process involved around three months’ worth of power consumptions which is why you might encounter a rather huge amount of charges in your latest bill even after TNB has deducted your MCO bills. Being at home longer than usual during MCO likely has led to the increase of power usages but for clarity, this article focuses solely on the calculations for the bill adjustment which TNB have submitted and received the green light from the authorities.
So, let’s have a closer look at how TNB ended up at that figure. Let’s say that the duration of your latest bill covered the period between 26 February to 26 May which equals to 91 days. According to the actual reading from the power meter, you have consumed 2612kWh throughout that duration.
Do you still remember the PRIHATIN discount? Well, then you might be aware that the discount is only given to power consumption that takes place after 1 April which means you have to consider the non-discounted period into your calculation since the duration of your bill starts before 1 April.
Aside from not having any outstanding payment, it has also been stated in your latest bill that your total Estimated Bill during the MCO period was RM 341.33. With these figures in mind, this is how your latest bill would approximately look like:
Now, before you panic once again, you do not have to pay the full amount immediately. Last month, TNB has announced the implementation of the Easy Payment Plan (EPP) which allow its residential customers to spread out the payment of their readjusted bill until 31 December 2020.
Furthermore, you do not have to do anything to sign up for this EPP as it is being applied automatically to all 7.5 million residential customers of TNB. If you want to take up the EPP route, all you need to do is just pay the initial EPP amount that is being shown in the yellow box at the top of your latest TNB bill.
As stated on TNB’s website, the initial EPP amount is 31% of the bill. In the case of the sample calculation that we used above, that means you can choose to pay RM 255.51 first instead of RM 824.22 if you want to spread the amount until the end of the year.
