Businesses reopen in Donggongon after flood

KOTA KINABALU: It is business as usual in Donggongon township after the flood that hit the district last weekend.

Coffee shops, retail stores and hawkers have opened for business, even though some were still cleaning up the muddy mess left behind by the flood.

Chong Soon Kong, owner of CSK Trading, said the flood had damaged about RM10,000 to RM20,000 worth of goods, mainly shoes and school uniforms.

He said the damaged goods were the merchandise he had just restocked.

He said the floodwater on Saturday had risen to the entrance and the vehicles driving through the back of the shop caused the water to flow into the premises.

“We have lost about RM10,000 to RM20,000 worth of goods, but we can claim insurance for this.

“This is the second time floodwater entered our shop, the first was two to three years ago,” he said.

Chong said the shop remained closed on Sunday as the floodwater had rendered the roads inaccessible to vehicles.

His employees were seen cleaning the floor and sorting through the damaged merchandise yesterday morning.

Bouna Gubang, who owns Bona Hairdressing Saloon at Donggongon town, has emptied out her premises in order to give the floor a thorough cleaning.

She said the damage was far less this time compared to the severe flood that struck a few years ago.

“Since the past flooding experience, I have always stored the electrical devices such as hair clippers and hairdryers on higher surfaces during heavy downpour in case it floods.”

She also lamented about the lack of concern by the government to look into the losses sustained by businesses due to the flood.

Bouna established the hairdressing saloon in 1998 and relocated to its present address at the Donggongon township shoplot four years ago.
