SIBU: The Sarawak Baitulmal Fund (TBS) has spent about RM8.5 million in ‘zakat’ (charity money) to date to help 55,168 individuals affected by the Movement Control Order (MCO) implementation throughout the state.

TBS general manager Datuk Abang Mohd Shibli Abang Mohd Naile said the special assistance of Covid-19 was credited directly into the accounts of the recipients.

“We are one of the fastest organisations to distribute such form of assistance to over 40,000 recipients through cash deposited into their accounts.

“As for the rest of recipients, TBS distributing aid in the form of food boxes and beverages,” Mohd Shibli said when addressing at the Aid Presentation Ceremony To ‘Asnaf’ cum Aid Presentation To Recipients For TBS Programme held at the Sarawak Islamic Complex Sibu here today.

He added that assistance in packing food was also provided to residents in the quarantine centre and Covid-19 positive individuals in hospitals, regardless of religion and race.

“In addition, we also provide personal protective equipment (PPE) to four hospitals during MCO in the state,” he added.

According to Mohd Shibli, TBS would be able to provide assistance or donations to the needy community as Muslims were still fulfilling their duties by paying ‘zakat’ to TBS.

In this regard, he called on the Muslim community to continue to pay their ‘zakat’ to ensure that the welfare of the asnaf in the state will be properly taken care after.

Meanwhile, during the function, a total of RM30,360 in ‘zakat’ was distributed to 21 recipients through three TBS Main Programmes.

The programmes are the Strengthening of the Tradition of Science, the Strengthening of the Welfare of the Ummah and the Building of Islamic Institutions.

“As of May 31 this year, applications for these three major programmes have benefited 17,070 applicants throughout the State with a total assistance of RM16.3 million,” said Mohd Shibli.
