Search continues for 62-year-old believed to be victim of croc attack in Betong

Bomba personnel sweeping the area for any signs of the missing man.

KUCHING: The search for a 61-year-old man believed to have been attacked by a crocodile at Sungai Undey in Kampung Tampan Pusa, Betong continues today.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the victim has been identified as one Sarkawi Talip, who was reported to be a victim of a crocodile attack at the Pusa district police headquarters at 3.45pm yesterday (July 2).

According to Bomba, the victim was tying sago palm branches at the riverbank when a crocodile suddenly appeared and snatched him into the river.

The horrific incident was witnessed by one of the three men who were with the victim in the area to collect sago palm branches.

Today, the search and rescue (SAR) operation will cover an area spanning one kilometre from where the victim was attacked.

At the scene were Bomba personnel from the Betong fire station, police, Civil Defence Force and 20 villagers.

Due to the river being shallow, Bomba personnel have to make use of smaller boats provided by other agencies to conduct the SAR operation.

A similar operation was also carried out yesterday and was postponed at nightfall.
