KUCHING: Democratic Action Party (DAP) has launched a fund-raising campaign themed ‘Solidarity with Lim Guan Eng’ to solicit money to pay for Lim’s bail of RM1 million.

Its national publicity secretary Tony Pua, in a statement last night, said the party is raising funds to pay for Lim’s bail and to repay the amount they borrowed.

“We have paid RM500,000 with funds borrowed from supporters and will have to pay another RM500,000 to the (Sessions) Court on Monday (Aug 10),” said the Damansara MP.

On Thursday, national DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, who is former finance minister, was charged in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court for allegedly soliciting a bribe in the form of 10 per cent of the profits that would be obtained later, as a fee to help a company to be appointed to carry out construction of the main roads and tunnels in the Penang undersea tunnel project during his tenure as the chief minister of Penang in 2011.

According to Pua, it is not the first time that Lim has to fight trumped up charges by “those in power in the court of law”.

“He (Lim) is now charged for allegedly ‘asking’ for a 10 per cent profit cut in the undersea tunnel project, which was awarded via open tender and evaluated by the most senior Penang and federal government civil servants,” he said.

Pua said the prosecution had asked for RM2 million bail deposit and the Court had granted RM1 million.

He added that Lim faced another two charges from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on Monday and Tuesday (Aug 10 and 11).

As such, he called upon all Malaysians “to unite to fight the political persecution of Lim Guan Eng”.

“Therefore, we are launching a RM10 one-week fund-raising campaign to pay for Lim’s bail and to repay the amount we borrowed. We believe that Malaysians will stand up for righteousness to ensure that justice will prevail,” said Pua.

Individuals can make donations to ‘DAP Malaysia’ through the Public Bank account 3063828309.

“Any surplus received from the donations will go towards the general elections to fight the backdoor government and return the mandate to Malaysians who voted for change in 2018,” concluded the statement.
