Indonesia Is The First Disney Plus Market In Southeast Asia; Launching On 5 September

In a rather interesting development, Disney+ will be making its official debut in Southeast Asia next month. Unfortunately, Malaysia is not the launch market for service though. Not even Singapore too as the first-ever country in this region to obtain Disney+ is actually Indonesia.

Given the maturity of streaming services in Malaysia, one might be dumbfounded that Disney has chosen Indonesia as the market to launch its much-anticipated streaming service in this region. However, it seems that the company is quite confident of the potential that Indonesia has for the service as its Disney CEO Bob Chapek himself who first revealed the Indonesian launch during a recent financial conference call.

Over there, the service is called Disney+ Hotstar which is similar to India. Hotstar was originally an Indian on-demand streaming platform that belonged to Star India which offers local contents including sports such as Indian Premier League cricket alongside several international contents from HBO, Showtime, and many more.

Hotstar together with its parent company then joined the Disney family after the 21st Century Fox acquisition deal. At this moment, the pricing of Disney+ Hotstar in Indonesia has not yet been revealed but in the United States, it is priced at USD 6.99 which is approximately RM 30 or IDR 102,000.

As for Malaysia, the Disney+ website for our market still showing the “Keep Me Updated” sign-up box which allows you to register your interest in the service. However, there is still no clear indication regarding the actual availability of Disney+ in Malaysia.
