Sony Confirms DualShock 4 Controller Will Work On PS5, But Not For Its Games

Due to popular demand, Sony previously acknowledged that the upcoming PlayStation 5 gaming console will be backwards compatible with a number of PS4 games. With that, a recent FAQ published on the official PlayStation blog also confirmed that the PS4’s DualShock 4 (DS4) controller will be compatible with the next generation console.

However, the company added that while the controller will work on the PS5, its functionality is only limited to supported PS4 games. So you’re pretty much out of luck if you’re thinking about saving a bit of cash from buying additional DualSense controllers, and utilising your older DS4s instead.

The FAQ also noted that – for the same purpose as the DualShock 4 – some PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepads will work with the PS5. In that regard, Sony recommended that users should check with the manufacturer to confirm the third-party device’s compatibility on PS5 and specific titles, just in case.

Additionally, the company mentioned that specialty peripherals such as racing wheels and flight sticks, as well as Platinum and Gold PlayStation wireless headsets will remain compatible with the new hardware and games. This also applies to the PlayStation Camera and PS Move controllers for VR gaming on the PS5, but did not mention if the existing PSVR headset is compatible with the new console or not.
