PS5 Fan To Be Adjusted Over Time Via Software Updates

The fan in the PS5 is one of the main reasons why the console is so huge. And Sony Interactive Entertainment even went as far as to explain why it decided to make the fan so big. And now, it looks like the company is also going to improve the fan’s performance over time. This will be done via firmware updates.

In an interview with 4Gamer.net, PS5 mechanical and thermal design team lead Yasuhiro Ootori explains that data on the the console’s accelerated processing unit (APU) will be collected over time for each game. Specifically the heat data based on the temperature sensor within the APU itself, and three others around the main board.

And based on data obtained there, Sony Interactive Entertainment will optimise the fan performance for each game. As mentioned earlier, this is done via online updates. In a sense, it’s done in a similar way to Nvidia’s DLSS, but for temperature rather than graphics.

This means that the cooling in the PS5 will improve over time, the more games are played. And being a gradual process, chances are it’s not something that most people will notice whenever it happens. But maybe it’s something to think about every time you see a firmware update is available.
