PS5 Blocks SSD Storage Expansion Slot Use At Launch

The PS5 comes will a blazing fast custom SSD, which also has a strange capacity of 825GB. That number is shaved down even further to between 660 and 670GB thanks to the console’s own operating system. And even if you manage to get the console early, you’ll be stuck with that storage cap for awhile.

If you remember from the PS5 teardown, the PS5 has a relatively accessible M.2 SSD expansion slot. But Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed to The Verge that the slot will be blocked by software in the console’s early days. A company representative says that it is”reserved for a future update”.

On one hand, it’s not exactly surprising. During the PS5 GDC presentation, Mark Cerny did mention that not all M.2 SSDs necessarily compatible with the console. This may be due to size or speed constraints, or even compatibility with the console’s I/O controller. And so, Cerny said “please hold off on getting that M.2 drive until you hear from us” while the company runs its compatibility tests and certifies compatible ones.

But on the flip side, The Verge also reports that the compatibility testing program may not have even started yet. So even if you have the cash to spare, you shouldn’t be getting that fancy PCIe 4 SSD just yet.
