Unavailability of fire hydrant hampers firemen’s efforts in putting out fire that engulfs wooden house in Bintangor

Firemen in the thick of action to put out a fire engulfing a wooden house at Jalan Yong Sing, Bintangor.

SIBU (Jan 4): The unavailability of fire hydrant and open water source hampered firemen’s efforts to douse a fire that engulfed a wooden house at Jalan Yong Sing in Bintangor near here, late last night.

According to Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 4 chief Janggan Muling, firemen had to collect water from the nearest fire hydrant which was located some one kilometre away from the scene.

He said a distress call was received at 9.43pm and a team of firemen from the Bintangor fire station were despatched to the scene which was located some seven kilometres away.

Janggan also said that the two occupants of the house managed to escape to safety.

“Initially, firemen encountered a difficulty in putting out the fire as there was no fire hydrant and open water source at the location (of the incident).

“As a result, firemen had to collect water from the nearest fire hydrant located about one kilometre away from the scene for four times.

“The non-permanent structure, where the bottom portion of the house was used for car repairs and spraying works with a store, was completely destroyed.

“The fire was extinguished at 11.47pm and the two occupants, who rented the place, managed to escape to safety,” he told The Borneo Post when contacted today.

Additionally, Janggan said the cause of the fire and losses were still under investigation.
