KUCHING (March 2): The government should conduct a survey to find out the people’s choice of the Covid-19 vaccine, be it Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 Vaccine, Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine or Moderna mRNA-1273 vaccine, said Sarawak Patriots Association (SPA) chairman Datuk Dr Lau Pang Heng.
In a statement today, Lau noted that while it is a good intended move by the government to purchase Covid-19 vaccine for the benefits of Sarawakians, it should conduct the said survey.
“SPA has interviewed 500 people, (whereby) 47 per cent felt that Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine is acceptable while 45 per cent felt that Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine is safe and another eight per cent are waiting for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
“SPA appreciates if the government can create more Covid-19 vaccine awareness particularly to address the concerns of the people. Such move can definitely encourage more Sarawakians to accept the Covid-19 vaccination,” he said.
Lau cited a research conducted by 10 academic institutions published in Springer Journal recently, which showed that 88.62 per cent of the population in China accepts Covid-19 vaccination, followed by 79.79 per cent in South Korea 74.53 per cent in India and 67.94 per cent in Singapore.
“Malaysia’s Health Ministry survey showed that 67 per cent of Malaysians accept Covid-19 vaccination, 17 per cent are unsure, while 16 per cent will not take.
“The total respondents were 212,006. The survey result was published in (a national) paper on Jan 8,” he said.
Therefore, Lau said it needs to be a continuous effort to educate members of the public about the vaccine.
“It is the only option to exit the Covid-19 pandemic. Otherwise, for Malaysians who are unsure about the Covid-19 vaccines or who do not want to take it, the government must convince them through clear and objective explanations by credible experts,” he said.
