MIRI (May 15): A total of 109 extra beds have been set up in Covid-19 Low Risk Quarantine and Treatment Centre (PKRC) at Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club here.

Minister-in-charge of Miri Disaster Management Committee (MDMC), Datuk Lee Kim Shin disclosed in a press statement yesterday that a total of 1,100 out of 1,152 beds in Miri Hospital Covid-19 wards and six PKRC here have been utilised.

“Presently, about 1,100 beds have been used up, hence the urgency to standby additional beds in case of another sudden surge in number of patients, a decision made during MDMC meeting via Zoom on Wednesday (May 12),” he said, adding that other districts in the division include rural areas of Beluru, Subis, Telang Usan and Marudi.

The Minister of Transports lauded Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, Miri for contributing 85 additional foldable beds, pillows and mattresses to the PKRC on Thursday.

The management of Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club also set up several new rooms to accommodate another 24 beds.

With the additional 109 beds, the total capacity of Covid-19 wards and PKRC in Miri has increased from 1,152 to 1,261 beds. PKRC at Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club can accommodate 472 low risk Covid-19 patients now.

Tzu Chi Miri had previously set up 60 beds at the same location and 30 foldable beds, mattresses and pillow at Petronas Games Village. In total, it has set up 145 beds at PKRC Eastwood Valley and Petronas Games Village.

Meanwhile, Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) supplied 15 cubicle tents which were set up at a hall in Eastwood Valley PKRC Thursday. Each tent can accommodate two beds with mattresses, pillow and blankets.

“These tents will provide some privacy to those receiving treatment at the hall. Altogether, there are 75 tents,” added Lee while checking on the setting up with Miri Hospital director Dr Jack Wong; doctor-in-charge of PKRC Dr Grace Lee; Tzu Chi Miri volunteers; councillor Kueh Chie Tiong and chief executive officer and executive manager of Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club Alex Chung.

Lee reminded everyone to continuously comply with standard operating procedures and stay vigilant to curb the spread of Covid-19.
