Policemen escort the accused at the court complex.

KUCHING (June 30): An unemployed man was sentenced to seven years’ jail and two strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here yesterday after he pleaded guilty to robbing a gold chain belonging to a housewife on June 22.

Judge Jason Juga also ordered the jail sentence on Mahadhir Abdul Razak, 35, to start yesterday.

According to the charge sheet, the accused together with another person still at large were charged with committing gang robbery against a housewife, 64, by snatching her gold chain about 10.50am on June 22 at Taman Matang Bersinar, Jalan Matang.

Based on the fact of case, the woman was snatched of her RM3,500-gold chain by two men on a motorcycle while she was outside her house. She, however, did not suffer any injuries.

The accused was arrested less than 24 hours after the woman lodged a police report.

The accused, who was not represented by a lawyer, meanwhile, pleaded not to be given a severe sentence on ground that he had regretted his actions.

He also said he had two small children to support, and that he had been retrenched from work since the start of the Movement Control Order (MCO).

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurfadzlin Mahmad Zulhasnan, however, requested that the accused be given a heavy sentence taking into account public interest, the trauma suffered by the victim and also the frequency of such cases occurring.
