Reserve some for those genuinely in need of food aid, but not in the list

    Chambai Lindong.

SIBU (June 6): The relevant government departments and agencies should reserve a certain number of food baskets for those in genuine need of assistance but whose names are not in the list of recipients during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period.

SDNU chairman Chambai Lindong hoped that only those who meet the criteria should receive the food aid.

“While it may not be totally possible to avoid overlapping, those who do not meet the criteria should not apply for food aid because the budget for it is limited. If they are selected it might be at the expense of those who truly need the food aid,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said many recipients during MCO 1.0 last year were renting old houses in the older parts of town while others were renting shophouses.

“Since the imposition of MCO 1.0 last year, SDNU Sìbu has been actively involved in the distribution of food aid to the affected Dayak community in and around town.”

During MCO 2.0, Chambai said they were tasked with registering applicants for food aid from the Dayak community who live in and around Sìbu, and who had lost their jobs due to the MCO 2.0. Their names were submitted to Sibu District Office for consideration for the food aid.

He said the imposition of MCO 3.0 from May 29 to June 14 had affected many daily and monthly wage earners working in the private sector.

In anticipation of this problem, and to help ease their burden, Chambai said the state government had allocated RM250,000 for food aid for each state constituency.

He said in the past two days, SDNU Sìbu had received queries from a number of people living in Sìbu town who had lost their jobs due to the imposition of MCO 3.0.

“They asked whether they will be given food aid this time like during MCO 2.0. They also asked where and how to apply for the food aid.”

He said it was also reported that those who have been selected to receive food aid in Sìbu District would begin to receive their food aid starting this week.
