Search and rescue operation for missing septuagenarian halted due to strong currents in Sg Mujok

Firefighters and relatives wait at Nanga Entabai for conditions to improve.

SARIKEI (June 29): The search and rescue (SAR) operation for a missing 75-year-old man, who fell into Sungai Mujok at Nanga Ju, Mujok, Julau on Sunday afternoon could not proceed today due to strong currents and the high water level.

Bintangor Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Nicholas Belulin said firefighters who were heading by boat to the scene had been informed by the longhouse residents about the unfavourable river conditions.

“We had a meeting this morning and would like to inform you (Bomba) that we are unable to send a pilot boat down to guide you to the scene.

“The river condition is currently dangerous for small boats or longboats as the water level in the river is very high, coupled with strong currents due to continuous rain since early morning,” a spokesperson from Rumah Gerasi said in a voice message to the department.

Nicholas said as such the team is waiting on standby at Nanga Entabai, and would continue to touch base with longhouse residents throughout the day.

Nyawai Guntur is said to have fallen into the river while trying to board a longboat at Rumah Gerasi, Nanga Ju, Mujok, about three hours by longboat from Julau town, around 4.30pm on Sunday.

Longhouse residents had conducted a SAR operation for the victim on Sunday but could not locate him.

Yesterday, Nyawai’s family members lodged a missing persons report at the Julau police station.
