KOTA SAMARAHAN (June 26): The Covid-19 vaccination centre run by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) here reached a new milestone last night after successfully vaccinated a total 5,584 individuals in a single day.

Unimas in its Facebook page said the record was achieved when the 5,584th person was registered at 7.30pm.

This meant a total 37,758 individuals have already been vaccinated at the PPV Unimas since it began operations on June 14, it revealed.

“Congratulations to all the volunteers for their strong will. You are the heroes. Together we fight Covid-19,” said Unimas Facebook page.

Local Government and Housing Minister Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian was among the first to congratulate Unimas on this achievement.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) advisor described it as a truly ‘just do it’ Sarawak spirit and beyond extraordinary.

“What a way to finish week two of operation.

“Have a weekend off to prepare for the online class of the following week. Time to recharge for another record of the mega vaccination centre the following week,” he said in his Facebook post.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr Noraini Ahmad also took it to Facebook to congratulate Unimas.

She mentioned that the strategies under National Recovery Plan can be expedited if everyone emulates Unimas.

“Congratulations and well done to Unimas and the leadership of its Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi.

“Despite being faced with many challenges, the volunteers there continued to give their commitment and cooperation. With the support from the Sarawak State Government, it is not impossible the National Recovery Plan can be implemented fast,” she said.

The PPV Unimas had achieved Mega PPV status on June 18 after successfully inoculating 5,000 doses of vaccines in a single day, on the fifth day of operations.

The PPV there had started off on Monday with 1,000 vaccinations in a day, followed by 3,000 vaccinations a day on Wednesday before achieving the 5,000 dose in a day-mark on June 18.

Unimas has aimed to administer at least 5,000 vaccine shots daily or at the PPV to assist the state government in achieving herd immunity by end of August.

Some 600 Unimas staff consisting of 150 with medical background including doctors and nurses, and 450 are non-medical staff including students and others, are involved at the PPV.
