Sarikei Customs foiled attempt to smuggle in marijuana via courier service

Sarawak Customs Director Herman Shah Abdullah in a statement said the suspects were trying to fool the authorities and the courier service by hiding the drugs in repacked instant noodles packets.

SARIKEI (July3): The Sarikei Customs Department foiled an attempt to smuggle in drugs via courier service on Thursday.

Sarawak Customs Director Herman Shah Abdullah in a statement said around 11am last Monday, enforcement officers in Sarikei came across a suspicious parcel, declared as food item, sent from the peninsula.

When they opened the parcel to investigate further, they found three plastic packets containing suspicious substances believed to be marijuana, estimated to weigh around 30g and worth about RM1,500.

“The enforcement officers are now tracing the owner facilitate in their investigation into the case which they classified under section 39A(1) of Dangerous Drug Act 1952, which provides for a jail term of two to five years and three to nine strokes of the cane, upon conviction,” said Herman.

He said the suspects were trying to fool the authorities and the courier service by hiding the drugs in repacked instant noodles packets.

Herman also called on the public to assist the Customs Department in combating smuggling of goods, especially cigarettes, beer, drug, firecrackers, cars, and others by reporting them to the department, and not to indulge in the illicit activities.

“The Customs Department welcomes cooperation from the public, and those who have information on smuggling activities can call the department’s toll-free line at 1-800-88-8855 to report, or by going to any of the nearest Customs Department’s office,” he said.
