Consul General: China, S’wak exploring mode of exchange, cooperation under new norm

Cheng speaking during the virtual celebration of the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China held over Zoom platform yesterday.

KUCHING (Sept 29): Both China and Sarawak are actively exploring the mode of exchange and cooperation under the new norm of Covid-19 pandemic prevention and control, said China’s Consul General in Kuching, Cheng Guangzhong.

Cheng said China and Sarawak had also carried out flexible and diversified exchanges in various fields via online platforms.

“What I will remember the most is the mutual supports between China and Sarawak in the fight against the pandemic, with batches of much-needed prevention supplies being delivered across the mountains and seas to the front-line, and numerous video conferences held to share information and experiences.”

He also mentioned the Baleh Hydroelectric Power Plant project built by China Energy Engineering Gezhouba Group was completed on schedule despite many challenges.

“We sincerely look forward to continuing working with our Malaysian and Sarawakian friends to promote cooperation in many fields, and to create a prosperous future together.”

Cheng said this during a virtual celebration of the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China held over Zoom platform.

He remarked that the cooperation between Sarawak and three friendly provinces and 26 friendly cities in China was still moving forward by overcoming the difficulties caused by the pandemic.

Furthermore, Cheng added, the China Consulate General in Kuching will always support the Chinese community in the state and he hoped the state will also continue to support China-Malaysia cooperation.

“I believe with our joint efforts, the mutual beneficial cooperation between China and Sarawak will rise to a new level.”

He said the great achievements of China could not have been made without the valuable contributions of overseas Chinese communities, including Malaysian Chinese.

“And the progress of China-Malaysia relations could not have been possible without the dedication of Chinese community in Sarawak.”

Cheng thanked Chinese enterprises, overseas students and Chinese citizens for their contributions, and stressed the Consulate General will continue to provide services to them.

“I have not been back to China for almost two years and I share your feelings of homesickness,” he added.

Speaking on the efforts to overcome Covid-19 pandemic, Cheng said China had completed 2.2 billion doses of vaccination and it was one of the countries with the lowest morbidity and mortality rates due to Covid-19 in the world.

At the same time, he said China had provided emergency assistance to 150 countries and 14 international organisations, as well as delivering 12 million doses of vaccines to over 100 countries and international organisations.

China is also committed to providing two billion doses of vaccines to the world by the end of the year, he added.

Meanwhile, during the virtual celebration, Cheng introduced the newly appointed China Deputy Consul General in Kuching, Song Changhong, who had just arrived in Kuching about a month.

He said Song had previously worked in the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, as well as working in the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Chinese Consulate General in Chicago.

“Although I am still new to Sarawak, I deeply feel that even though the pandemic has temporarily affected the normal communication of people between China and Sarawak, it cannot waver the deep relationship between us.

“Our joint efforts to combat the pandemic and actively innovate the mode of cooperation and communication reflect that we are a community of shared future for mankind,” said Song in her address in the Zoom meeting.

Among the notable personalities attending the virtual celebration were state Minister of Local Government and Housing Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, who was representing the chief minister; Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah; Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin; and Federation of Chinese Associations Sarawak president Dato Richard Wee.
