MIRI (Dec 3): The body of a 37-year-old man from Kuala Sibuti in Niah feared drowned after a fibre boat he and another crew member were in capsized in Lajong estuary of Kuala Niah waters on Dec 3 was found in the wee hours today.
The man, identified as Mohammad Irwandi Ramli Rambli, was found about six kilometres from the scene by Kpg Lajong village security and development (JKKK) members at around 1.30am.
“Batu Niah fire station chief contacted the operations centre at 6.28am informing that the victim was found by the fishermen.
“A Bomba team has been deployed to the scene to obtain and confirm the information which will updated from time to time,” said the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre in a statement today.
According to the victim’s brother, Ahmad Zaini, the body was later brought to Miri Hospital for further action.
Following the discovery of the body, the Search and Rescue (SAR) operation was concluded.
The SAR operation was launched on Thursday after Bomba received a distress call regarding the incident at around 2.10pm.
The operation was first carried out on foot on the coast of Kpg Kuala Lajong Niah and in the area where the victim’s friend and boat were found.
It was later postponed as it was dark and the SAR resumed today.
The victim was said to have gone fishing on a boat at sea for shrimp with his 52-year-old friend Hanafi Othman at about 10am in Kuala Niah on Thursday.
On their way back at noon, their boat suddenly capsized after arriving at Muara Kuala Niah.
The beach conditions were said to be windy with strong waves.
Hanafi was found stranded in a safe condition on the beach of Kpg Kuala Lajong by villagers about 1km from where their boat sank while Mohammad Irwandi went missing.
