LUNDU (Dec 2): A new resettlement area will be built once the new road to Kampung Stunggang Melayu is completed, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“It will involve 220 (housing) lots. It will be a settlement with an organised setting based on modern village specification, with utilities and concrete drains,” he said at a press conference here yesterday.
He was confident the new settlement will complement the development in Lundu, where a new campus for Centre of Technical Excellence (Centexs) is now sited, as well as neighbouring Sematan.
“I urge the young people to participate in the exciting development taking place around them,” he said.
Abang Johari had earlier officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new 1.6km link road which will be built from Jalan Tun Hussein Onn/Jalan Bau-Lundu to Kampung Stunggang Melayu Baru here.
Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak in a statement said the project was approved under State Fund.
“This project will mainly benefit Kampung Stunggang Melayu and the surrounding area, giving easy access to the Pan Borneo Highway without needing to travel around past Lundu, thus reducing travel distance and time,” said JKR Sarawak in the statement.
It pointed out the completion of Pan Borneo Highway stretch to Telok Melano from Sematan in 2019, and future completion of upgrading of Pan Borneo Highway stretch from Kuching to Sematan, is expected to increase the number of visitors to Lundu District.
It further said the new link will open up land for the village extension and boost economic growth that will elevate people’s income.
“With the availability of good road infrastructure there, Lundu District’s socio economy will vastly improve and will turn to a busy district in the southern region of Sarawak that will benefit Lundu’s population of 33,000 people,” it added.
On the scope of work, it said the main feature is the 1.6km JKR R3 Road Standard single carriageway from Jalan Tun Hussein Onn/Jalan Bau-Lundu to Kampung Stunggang Melayu Baru.
Other works include constructing permanent concrete bridges across existing streams and to construct culverts and roadside structures to channel surface water runoff.
There will also be earthworks consisting of filled embankment and cut slopes; ground treatment works such as surcharging, piling and installation of prefabricated vertical drains and piling works to structures such as bridges and culverts.
Temporary diversion works and slope protection and erosion control measures will also take place as well as miscellaneous works such as road signage, road markings and guardrails.
Also present at the ceremony were Deputy State Secretary Dato Sri Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Urban Development and Natural Resources Ministry permanent secretary Datu Zaidi Mahdi, Land and Survey Department director Abdullah Julaihi, Kuching Resident Datu Sherrina Hussaini and Tanjung Datu incumbent Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu.
