PDP man demands return of ‘traditional’ Pakan seat to party

Branch chairman Ting Kew Ming said Pakan incumbent Tan Sri William Mawan, who was their former party president, left the party to contest as a Barisan Nasional (BN)-direct candidate in the 2016 state election.

SIBU (Dec 2): Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Pakan branch is demanding the return of the party’s ‘traditional’ Pakan seat.

Branch chairman Ting Kew Ming said Pakan incumbent Tan Sri William Mawan, who was their former party president, left the party to contest as a Barisan Nasional (BN)-direct candidate in the 2016 state election.

“In the election, he (Mawan) abandoned us and got himself fielded as a BN-direct candidate instead of leaving the seat to the good care of us.

“Now, we demand our right over the seat based on allocation of seats among Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) component parties,” Ting said.

Following his win in 2016, Mawan joined GPS backbone Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB).

Ting said he agreed with PDP president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing who had voiced the party’s intention to contest in the three ‘traditional’ seats which were allocated to BN-direct candidates in 2016.

Apart from Pakan, the other two seats are Batu Danau and Bekenu whose respective incumbents, Paulus Palu Gumbang and Datuk Rosey Yunus, followed Mawan’s footsteps in joining PBB.

On a similar matter, Ting said PDP’s choice of candidate for the Pakan seat in the coming election is Edwin Bandang.

“Edwin is liked by the people and GPS Pakan leaders in the constituency.
“He has good character and years of political experience. We believe he can deliver the seat for GPS,” he said.
