According to Abang Johari, this could form a part of the ‘economic ingredients’ that hold high potential for further development in the future.
MUKAH (Dec 19): The establishment of a board meant to oversee the development of sago and nipah has been proposed by Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
According to him, this could form a part of the ‘economic ingredients’ that hold high potential for further development in the future.
In this sense, he referred to a lucrative three-year deal of a Sarawak-based company involving the export ‘gula apong’ (nipah palm sugar) to Singapore, sealed during the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) rule.
“Gula apong is a healthy sugar ingredient to make cookies.
“For sago, the state government previously allocated RM10 million for the local scientists to conduct research and development works on the product.
“There are facilities (pilot sago liquid waste treatment plant) in Kampung Teh in Mukah, producing cooking biogas from ‘rumbia’ (sago palm).
“The (sago and nipah development board) proposal could be set up,” said Abang Johari at the ‘Community Leaders Meeting-Telian/Balingian’ on Friday.
Adding on, the GPS chairman also highlighted the importance of education for the future of the state.
“In this regard, we have the education institutions here that can cover Mukah and the nearby areas.
“Now with the world operating on high technology, I believe that by 2030, Mukah would be developed and probably become a model to other areas since the people here are very receptive to development.”
Abang Johari also called upon all local leaders to play their roles effectively in promoting peace and unity in their respective communities.
“As long as there is GPS, priority would be given to Sarawakians first – if not we Sarawakians, who else will look after Sarawak people?”
Among those attending the event were Mukah MP Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib, as well as Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah.
