SIBU (March 7): The proposal of establishing the Datuk Patinggi Dr Wong Soon Kai Chair on Medical Devices Technology and Innovation in University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) has received approval from Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
According to UTS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Khairuddin Ab Hamid, the green light comes with a RM2 million allocation.
He said the proposal was made by Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development I Dr Annuar Rapaee, who is also chairman of the university’s board of governors.
“The YB (Dr Annuar) has suggested that a special research chair be established in UTS in the field of medical technology.
“This proposal has already been agreed by the YAB Premier of Sarawak, with a grant allocation of RM 2 million.
“It is named after Datuk Patinggi Dr Wong Soon Kai, in remembering the services of a great medical figure in Sibu,” said Khairuddin at the second session of UTS’ sixth convocation in Kingwood Hotel here yesterday, where Dr Annuar officiated at the closing of the two-day ceremony.
It was informed that for the convocation, a total of 387 UTS graduates received their scrolls.
Adding on, Khairuddin said following Dr Annuar’s appointment as chairman of the varsity’s board of governors, the deputy minister ‘got down to work immediately’.
“In such a short time, we have witnessed many reforms and progress achieved under the leadership of YB Dr Annuar,” he added.
Khairuddin then listed the industrial vaccination centre (PPVIN) housed in UTS and the mobile vaccination centre set up on board the UTS’ bus, as the brainchild of Dr Annuar, and these were run together with several partners, such as the Ministry of Health, Sibu Hospital, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), Pansar and SEGi Medical Faculty.
On another subject, Khairuddin said the UTS had established six research centres focusing on areas of great importance for Sarawak such as renewable and green energy, sustainable technological innovation, Borneo regionalism and conservation, wood engineering products, drone technology, blockchain, cybersecurity, and business technopreneurship.
“As a ‘young university’, we are proud to be able to publish our own online journals, namely the ‘Borneo Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities’, and the ‘Borneo Journal of Sciences and Technology’.”
In this regard, Khairuddin thanked the Sarawak government for its continuous support, especially with regard to the new phase of campus development in UTS.
He said the new academic block and student sports complex had just reached completion and should be ready for usage in the near future.
