ATM panel to review appeal by dishonourably-discharged army men to be given service recognition

KUCHING (Aug 22): The Veterans Recognition Advisory Committee Panel of the Armed Forces (ATM) is reviewing 19 applications from discharged ex-servicemen to get their military service be recognised.

In stating this, Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz said the applications were submitted by those who were dishonourably discharged during the past 10 to 15 years due to misconduct, rendering them unqualified to be recognised as ATM veterans.

“The committee held its first meeting on July 28 this year, and a total of 19 applications were received during the meeting.

“On the decision to recognise them as ATM veterans, the ministry will be announcing this soon,” he said at a press conference held after the presentation of Pingat Jasa Malaysia (PJM) at a hotel here yesterday.

Adding on, Ikmal Hisham said the setting up of the committee was one of the efforts by the ministry to look after and enhance the welfare of army veterans.

Ikmal Hisham answers a question posed by a reporter during the press conference.

He also pointed out another measure undertaken by the ministry was to extend the payment of ‘pencen terbitan’ (derivative gratuity) to widows or widowers who had married their spouses after the latter had retired from the ATM veterans.

“The veteran’s age eligibility for the ‘pencen terbitan’ has been extended to 80 years old.”

During the press conference, the federal deputy minister also called upon the corporate entities in Sarawak to recruit able-bodied veterans in their organisations and offer them better salary schemes.

“There are several examples that have been implemented in Sarawak; there are a total of 80 veterans who have been employed as members of the Immune Belt Enforcement Team (IBET), and 40 veterans employed as members of the Sarawak Coast Guard,” he pointed out.

At the event, Ikmal Hisham presented the PJM to a total of 713 veterans in Sarawak who had served during the Emergency era.

It is informed later that to date, there are 31,221 ATM veterans who have received the medals.
