Hasbi: Bullying not prevalent at MRSM Sarawak colleges

Hasbi (seated, centre) shares a light moment with invited guests and award recipients as they pose for a group photo. On his right is Mara deputy director general Rohayah Mohd Zain.

KUCHING (Aug 22): There is no prevalence of bullying in Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) colleges in Sarawak, with reported cases at a very minimal level, said Rural Development Deputy Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah.

He said when it comes to such cases, his ministry, which oversees MRSM colleges nationwide, will take stern and swift action against those involved.

Citing a bullying case in MRSM Kepala Batas, Penang, Hasbi said swift action had been taken including expelling the perpetrator.

“Such case is very isolated and indeed action has been taken by expelling the student involved.

“We do not keep quiet, and we don’t sweep the problem under the carpet. We do take action, but it is just that we do not hype it,” he told a press conference after officiating the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) Sarawak excellence awards presentation here yesterday .

He said this when asked about the alleged bullying case involving an MRSM student in Penang that went viral recently on social media.

According to Hasbi again, there were very few bullying cases in Sarawak and Sabah MRSM colleges compared to those in the peninsula.

In Sarawak, the student population in MRSM colleges is small while its environment as well as stress level are also different, he explained.

“Though such cases are very minimal, we do not take it lightly when such cases happen. We want MRSMs to have a conducive and safe environment for our students,” he added.

On another matter, the federal deputy minister said his ministry will proceed with its plan to build two more MRSM colleges in Sarawak, namely in Bintulu and Lawas, to add to the present colleges in Kuching, Betong and Mukah.

He said MRSM Bintulu is expected to be completed next year while the Lawas campus is in the retendering process.

“Maybe in the future, MRSM colleges will be increased if there is a need,” he said, adding that a Kolej Professional Mara in Kapit has been approved while another one is planned in Limbang.

He also said his ministry has over 200 institutions focussing on technical and vocational education and training (TVET) throughout the country.

“We want to make sure what is available there (in Peninsular Malaysia) can also be extended to Sarawak in the context of Keluarga Malaysia,” he said.
