KUCHING (Aug 23): The Kuching Division Journalist Association (KDJA) has received a financial contribution of RM10,000 from Ragad Foundation.

The presentation ceremony was conducted during a hi-tea session with the media at a hotel here yesterday afternoon, where Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib handed over a mock cheque to KDJA chairman Ronnie Teo.

In his remarks made on behalf of the association, Teo expressed gratitude to Raghad and the Ragad Foundation for the contribution, adding that the funds would be used to manage Kuching media affairs and also to facilitate the running of knowledge and skills enhancement courses for members of the press here.

“As we know, the media plays an important role in the development of a country, not only from the aspect of disseminating information but also from the aspect of verifying the facts that are being disseminated.

“This issue is becoming more important especially in the current era of social media that facilitates the spread of information, regardless of whether the information is right or wrong.

“We, in the mass media, are working very hard to ensure that the information released is correct, accurate and authentic for public knowledge and community development, regardless of politics, business, crime, sports, or the community,” he said.

Teo also expressed his hope that the public and the private sectors would continue to work together with the media.

At the event, Raghad also presented donations in the form of cash and essential food items from the Ragad Foundation to 50 ‘asnaf’ (those eligible to receive tithe, according to syariah) households.

Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah and Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng also attended the hi-tea session.
