BINTULU (Jan 18): The state Public Works Department (JKR) is moving forward in regards to exploring cost saving, cost efficiency, quality and sustainability, with the completion of the JKR Sarawak Research Centre, said Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Majang Renggi.

In a statement yesterday, he said the main function of the research centre is to collaborate with local academic institutions on applied research to cater for industrial needs.

“The centre will be a reference and advisory centre for engineering practices and for validating the suitability of new industrial products before they are being adopted for use in the construction industry.

“In line with the core business of JKR Sarawak, this research centre strategises their core discipline into four areas, namely pavement and highway; geotechnical; structure; and material and building,” he said.

The statement was issued following Majang’s working visit to Pertama Ferroalloys Sdn Bhd at Samalaju Industrial Park here on Monday.

Majang, who is Samalaju assemblyman, said since its establishment in 2014, the centre has published three guidelines – ‘Design Guidelines for Low Volume Rural Road’, ‘Guideline for the Design of Suspension Footbridge’ and ‘Guideline for the Selection and Design of Foundation’ for the reference of the construction industry.

He said currently, JKR Sarawak has made two collaborations, one with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak on ‘Lightweight Concrete Stabilisation for Road and Study’ on the use of non-standard aggregate for road; and the other with Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) on the potential use of non-standard materials for road construction in Sarawak.

“With the completion of this JKR Sarawak Research Centre, JKR Sarawak is moving forward to explore cost saving or cost efficiency, quality and sustainability,” he said.

On his visit to Pertama Ferroalloys, Majang said its aim was to explore the use of waste in the manufacturing industry such as slag generated from ferrosilicon for road construction.

He was accompanied by his ministry’s permanent secretary Chiew Chee Yau, Bintulu Resident Nyurak Keti, and officers from the ministry and JKR.
