Dr Sim hopes to see SUPP led by woman president in his lifetime

KUCHING (March 24): Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian hopes to see a woman party president in his lifetime in embracing equity.

The Deputy Premier believed that women today have the quality to be the president of the party.

“As we embrace equity and give women a chance, they can be successful in the professional, technical and service industry.

“I hope that (one day) the president of SUPP is a woman, and hope to see this come true when I am still alive,” he said at the SUPP Women Section International Women’s Day celebration at the party’s headquarters here tonight.

Dr Sim said that it is important to celebrate women as both 50 per cent of the state’s population and party membership are women.

He said that it was not easy for women to participate as a member as they have to shoulder the role of a mother or grandmother, while taking care of the family.

Earlier, organising chairperson and SUPP Women chief, Cr Kho Teck Wan, said that the gathering was held in the spirit of self-reliance.

She said that this has been the tradition since the party was formed in 1959.

She added that as the nation embraces equity, issues faced by women must be voiced out, and called out on inequality.

“Equity focuses on fair treatment, based on our value, merit and ability. We need to encourage each other and celebrate women’s achievements,” said Kho.

Also present were Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng and Batu Kitang assemblyman Cr Lo Khere Chiang.
