Sibu Health office issues 154 compounds for flouting smoking ban this year

SIBU (March 25): A total of 655 eateries were checked by the enforcement team from Sibu Divisional Health Office (DHO) between Jan 1 and March 17 this year, during which 154 compounds were issued for smoking offences under Section 32B (Control of Tobacco Regulation 2004).

DHO said the number of compounds issued showed an increase of 130, compared to the same period last year.

“Individuals who received the notice of offence would be compounded RM250.

“Offenders who fail to pay the compound will be brought to court. If found to have flouted the law, an individual is punishable by a fine not exceeding RM10,000 or imprisonment not exceeding two years,” it said.

It also informed that 15 compounds had been issued to premises owners so far for failing to comply with the rules.

“Premises owners who fail to comply with the rules can be fined not exceeding RM3,000 or imprisoned not exceeding six months,” said the DHO, adding that so far, all had paid up their compounds.

It pointed out that the prohibition on smoking at eateries is to prevent inhaling of second-hand smoke by diners, which may affect their health.

DHO reminded that smoking increases the risk of respiratory illnesses including asthma, bronchitis and pneumonia.

“(There is a) higher risk to have diseases such as lung cancer, heart disease and stroke.

“Those willing to stop smoking may visit the clinic for Quit Smoking Programme,” it advised.
