Inaugural International Recovery Symposium takes place in Kuching this September

Cindy speaks during the breaking of fast event.

KUCHING (April 14): The first-ever International Recovery Symposium (IRS) is scheduled to be held here from Sept 18 to 21.

Organisation for Addiction Prevention, Treatment & Rehabilitation (OAPTAR) president Cindy Biding said the body is the strategic partner appointed by the Social Development Council of the Ministry of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development to organise IRS 2023.

She said the symposium will be the world’s premier event for the continuing professional development of healthcare practitioners in the specialty of addiction and mental health treatment.

Scheduled to take place at Imperial Hotel, Cindy said IRS will feature keynote speeches from world-renowned experts in the field, as well as panel discussions, seminars and workshops on a range of topics related to addiction and mental health.

“Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the latest trends and practices in prevention, treatment and recovery interventions and services, network with peers and colleagues from around the world, and explore new treatment methodologies and technologies,” she said at a breaking of fast event hosted by OAPTAR and the International Society for Substance Use Professionals (ISSUP) Malaysia Chapter, here Wednesday.

Cindy, who is also ISSUP Malaysia chairman, said the symposium provides an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge and connect with industry leaders and experts.

She added the event is open to anyone involved in the addiction and mental health treatment industry, including clinicians, researchers, educators, policymakers and advocates.

“We encourage interested parties to register early to take advantage of early-bird pricing and secure their spot.

“Details of the IRS will be made later by the Ministry of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development.”

More information on the event, as well as further details on registration, can be found at www.recoverysymposium.com.

Meanwhile, Cindy said OAPTAR was registered in October 2019 with the purpose of working together with relevant agencies to address drug concerns in our communities.

She said they conduct ongoing life skills programmes for young children, youth groups and families to build and maintain resilience against risks of substance use.

On ISSUP Malaysia, she said it was registered in August 2020 and recognised as a national chapter to provide leadership and direction to promote ethical, evidence-based practices in prevention, treatment and recovery intervention of substance use disorders.

“ISSUP Malaysia also serves as a networking platform to unite all stakeholders in the field of drug demand reduction,” she added.

She also announced that a short video contest titled ‘Breaking The Stigma’ will be held for Malaysia’s future agents of change to share their perspectives on destigmatising substance use disorder or drug addiction through creative, impactful videos.

The top-three winners will receive RM2,500, RM1,300 and RM700, respectively.

The contest period is from April 15 to May 15, and it is open to Malaysian citizens between the ages of 18 and 50 years.

Each video must be within 30 to 60 seconds and can be in any language, but must include Bahasa Malaysia or English subtitles.

Entrants must upload the video onto their social media account (TikTok, Instagram and/or Facebook) and tag @issup.malaysia.
