KUCHING (April 18): The Sarawak State Muaythai Association (PMNS) has proposed that Bintulu Division be chosen as the host for the muaythai event in Sukma XXI.
Its president Jumaat Ibrahim said the proposal has been submitted to the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development as well as the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) for consideration.
He said Bintulu was chosen to help promote the tourism sector in the town as well as to boost the economy of the local population during Sukma.
“We want people from the peninsula who come here to realise that Sarawak is not just about Kuching. This state has also Bintulu, Miri, Sibu, Samarahan and other cities/towns.
“By making Bintulu the host, we can indirectly promote the tourism sector in the city.
“Therefore, we hope that this proposal will be approved by the authorities so that we can make various preparations immediately,” he said when met at the PMNS joint breaking of fast event yesterday.
According to Jumaat, the party has visited their proposed venue, Muhibbah Bintulu Stadium, and believes that the stadium is very suitable to be used as a tournament venue.
In addition to being able to accommodate many spectators, the stadium has a large space for the use of athletes and officials from contingents of other states who will camp there later.
“This is the first time muaythai is contested in Sarawak at Sukma. Thus, we want to ensure the best organisation.
“We have informed the authorities why we chose Stadium Muhibbah Bintulu and what needs to be done to improve the facilities there.
“We still have about a year before Sukma XXI and there is ample time to make preparations to improve what is needed at the stadium if our proposal is approved by the authorities,” he added.
On another matter, Jumaat said his party will continue organising His Excellency’s Cup (TYT) Muaythai Championship which is scheduled to take place from May 12 to 14 at the Kuching Sarawak Arena.
This edition is expected to be livelier with the participation of around 30 boxers from several foreign countries such as Yemen, Canada, Australia, Thailand and so on as well as local boxers in Sarawak, Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia.
“We have been organising this tournament for the past 10 years and it continues to grow in popularity, becoming a competition that muaythai athletes are always looking forward to not only in the country but all over the world.
“In this regard, we are very grateful to the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts; The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development as well as the Sarawak State Sports Council who have supported us a lot in ensuring that we can continue organising this TYT Cup Tournament until today,” added Jumaat.
