Gasak names two more candidates to be fielded in Pending and Kota Sentosa for next state election

KUCHING (Aug 8): Newly-formed political alliance Gabungan Anak Sarawak (Gasak) confirmed two more candidates for the next state election today.

Gasak is an alliance comprising of five local political groups, Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi), Sarawak Worker’s Party (SWP), Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) Baru, Sarawak for Sarawakians (S4S) and Sarawak Independence Alliance (SIA).

The party had previously stated that they planned to contest in all 82 seats in the state when the time came.

Gasak protem chairperson who is also Aspirasi president, Lina Soo revealed that Chan Chee Hiong will be contesting in Pending and Tan Kok Chiang in Kota Sentosa.

She also confirmed that Alex Leong Shaow Tung will be contesting in Batu Lintang.

“These are our three leading Sarawak for Sarawakian (S4S) activists. They have been fighting for Sarawak rights since 2013, particularly the right for Sarawakians to have a referendum for self-determination,” she told a press conference at S4S’s office today.

The party had announced its first five candidates on Aug 1, who are Gasak protem president Bobby William for Senadin, Soo for Padungan, Fong Pau Teck for Pujut, Buln Ribos for Serembu and Alex Leong for a seat in Kuching.

The party had applied with the Registrar of Societies Malaysia to be registered as a new political party to enable it to contest under one logo, but should it not be registered in time, then the candidates will be contesting under the Aspirasi or SWP flag, she explained.

Meanwhile, Leong said that there were queries from the public on the outcome of the state-wide petition for the enactment of the referendum act or ordinance to safeguard Sarawak rights, which was collected by S4S back in 2015.

He said that the petition was still there and some 300,000 signatures have been collected, of which after removing duplicates, numbered some 270,000 signatures.

“We have given a copy of the petition to our late chief minister Datuk Patinggi Adenan Satem and it was received by his assistant in June 2016, but he passed away not long after that and there was no response from the state government. The second copy was sent to the United Nations Malaysia.”

“Because there was no news about the petition, we decided to contest in the next state election so that we can table a motion in the DUN based on the petition.”

Leong believed that had Adenan not pass away, the referendum would made its way into the DUN, just like when he gazetted Sarawak Independence Day on July 22, 2016.
