Jaya Li Hua Market in Sibu to see food, drink stalls after renovation

SIBU (Aug 9): Jaya Li Hua Market here will be renovated to include food and drink stalls in a bid to entice more visitors, disclosed councillor Albert Tiang.

The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Market & Petty Traders Standing Committee chairman said this was to boost the market’s vibrancy, as the market currently has 12 stalls selling wet and dry products.

“The council’s intention is to boost the market by providing more variety for visitors to Jaya Li Hua Market. We want to maximise the place.

“After the renovation, there will be five food stalls and one drink stall,” he revealed, adding that there will be 17 stalls altogether after the completion of renovation.

According to Tiang, tender for the renovation works would likely be called sometime next month.

“The design will be finalised this month, while the estimates and (sources of) funding will be discussed (later),” he said when contacted today.

He said the market was spacious and had no problem accommodating 17 stalls.

Tiang noted that from Mondays to Fridays, this market recorded about 180 visitors daily.

He concurred that the number may not be huge when compared to the larger markets such as Sibu Central Market.

“But for Jaya Li Hua Market, which has only 12 stalls presently, this is quite a sizeable number,” he pointed out.

Earlier, Tiang recalled there was a plan to convert the marketplace into a food court.

“But hawkers (selling dry and wet products) prefer to stay there as they said they are doing quite well there all this while,” he said.

The market recorded 968 visitors from Aug 1 till 7.

Meanwhile, Sibu Central Market registered 20,903 visitors during the same period, Grand Heights Market (5,409), Rejang Park Market (4,742) and Tiong Hua Road Market (3,168).

Pasar Malam on the other, recorded 16,037 visitors from Aug 1 till 7.
