KUCHING (July 2): The Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) under the Chief Minister’s Office yesterday began the distribution of this year’s grants for non-Islamic religious bodies and houses of worship.
A statement from the office of Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, who is Unifor minister in charge, said a Chinese temple, two chapels and a church were among the early grant recipients.
The cheque presentation ceremony was held at Uggah’s office here.
Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazland Abang Hipni represented Kuching Hockien Association in receiving a cheque for RM1.5 million for the construction of the Mazu Temple here, while Tellian assemblyman Yussibnosh Balo received a grant for RM2 million on behalf of the committee of Kampung Tellian St Anthony’s Chapel in Mukah for the chapel’s construction.
Senator Datuk Paul Igai represented Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing in receiving a cheque for RM2 million for the construction of a road leading to the Kuala Setiam Christian cemetery in Bintulu.
Lambir assemblyman Ripin Lamat was represented by an aide in receiving a cheque for RM2 million for the construction fund of St Barnabas Church in Taman Tunku, Miri. The allocation was announced by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg during an earlier working visit to Miri.
Another recipient was New Holy Spirit Chapel in Permyjaya, Miri which received a grant of RM1 million. The cheque for the grant was handed over to Law Seng Hoon who is the private secretary to Senadin assemblyman Datuk Lee Kim Shin.
Meanwhile, Uggah in the statement said the second round of distribution of Unifor grants would be held soon, involving a sum of RM17 million.
Among those present at yesterday’s ceremony were Unifor director Richard Lon and Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations president Dato Richard Wee.
