UTC Sibu reopens, long queues on first day

Members of the public queue up outside the entrance of Sibu UTC.

SIBU (July 2): A large crowd was seen queuing up at the Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) here following the resumption of operations of selected services yesterday.

The people started to queue up as early as 7am for services offered by certain government departments and agencies situated on the fourth and fifth floors of Sibu Central Market.

National Registration Department (NRD) and Immigration Department resumed operations at the centre yesterday after almost one month of closure following the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO).

For the services of Road Transport Department (JPJ), members of the public were directed to the JPJ office at Jalan Oya Lama as the department’s office at UTC remained closed.

The one-stop service outlet for state government and agencies (Service Sarawak) also reopened yesterday for payment of utility bills and renewal of trade licences.

The NRD and Immigration Department operations are on appointment basis while walk-ins are allowed at Service Sarawak.
It was also observed that there was strict compliance of standard operating procedures (SOPs) at the UTC.

The SOPs include compulsory use of face masks, scanning of MySejahtera or manual registration before entering the centre, checking of body temperature, and physical distancing for the visitors.

(Standing from right) Wong, Ting and others monitor the situation at Sibu UTC.

According to Sibu UTC manager Annie Wong, each visitor was asked at the entrance their purpose of coming to the centre.

“We also limit the number of visitors at any one time to the premises. For example, only one person from each household is allowed to pay bills at the Service Sarawak counter.

“If it is for MyKad application for children attaining 12 years of age, we allow one parent to accompany the child. For the elderly requiring assistance, we allow one family member to accompany him/her.

“These strict measures are taken not just to comply with the SOPs but most importantly for the people’s safety,” she said.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting also visited the centre yesterday to ensure the visitors complied with SOPs.
Sibu UTC opens from 8am to 5pm.
