MIRI (Dec 1): Pakatan Harapan (PH) Sarawak has denied that it is breaking apart despite disputes on seat allocations between Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).
PH Sarawak deputy chairman Dr Michael Teo told a news portal yesterday that the argument, which according to him is a minor one, was about placing winnable candidates in several of the constituencies in northern Sarawak.
“In any public election – whether for state or parliamentary constituencies – each political party wanting to contest will put forward their preferred candidates,” he explained.
In the case of Miri, he pointed out Senadin, Piasau and Pujut seats are considered hot seats.
Dr Teo won Miri parliamentary seat in the 2018 general election against Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) candidate Datuk Sebastian Ting by nearly 14,000-vote majority.
Analysing the votes, the MP pointed out that he won in Pujut polling stations by almost 8,000 votes, Piasau polling stations about 3,000 votes and Senadin polling stations by approximately 4,000 votes.
“In this 12th state election, Sarawak DAP wants to field candidates in the three seats. Yet it lost Senadin to SUPP by 4,000 votes in the last state election, and it also lost Piasau to SUPP by nearly 3,000 votes.”
In view of this, he added, Sarawak PKR should be fielding its candidates in Miri (state seats) since PKR won by big majority in the parliamentary election.
The dispute between PKR and DAP over the seats, he said, will be looked into by PH national leaders, adding the national side will mediate and decide the next step.
Meanwhile, DAP candidates Alan Ling for Pujut, Peter Hee (Piasau) and Marcus Hugo Matu Lejau (Senadin) have received their ‘watikah’ (letter of appointment) from DAP leadership and purchased nomination forms on Monday.
Former senator and former Piasau assemblyman Alan Ling was defeated by SUPP secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting by 2,112 votes in the 2016 state election. Previously, he beat SUPP president and deputy chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam in the 2011 state election. He will contest in Pujut.
Peter Hee and Marcus Hugo are fresh candidates to contest against Piasau incumbent Ting and Senadin incumbent Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin respectively.
