Baru attributes win to political maturity of Ba Kelalan voters

    Baru Bian

LAWAS (Dec 20): Political awakening in Ba Kelalan in the last decade has translated into a historic victory for Baru Bian in the 12th state election on Saturday.

This was his assessment after he won three times in consecutive state elections with two different Opposition parties – Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) – in a remote, rural constituency. Such a trend is normally seen only in urban seats by the Democratic Action Party (DAP) in the state.

The maturity of the voters shone at the ballot box on December 18 which even surprised him, the elated assemblyman said in a statement after official results was announced on Saturday night.

He added that it showed the Lun Bawang people were not easily misled by old rhetoric that only BN/GPS can bring development to the people.

“The outcome of the election in N. 81 Ba Kelalan today was truly amazing. In spite of the low voters turnout, my winning majority has increased from 538 votes in the 2016 election to 680 today, “ he said.

Baru polled polled 2,687 votes to defeat his main rival GPS-PDP candidate Sam Lay while Peter Asut of PBK ( 110 votes ), Martin Labo of PKR (57 votes) and Independent candidate Agnes Padan (55) all lost their deposits.

Pundits had expected him to win but the winning margin turned heads when the much awaited result from the Lun Bawang heartland came out as the turnout was only 58.85 percent of the 8,305 eligible voters.

Baru said the constituents voted for more important things that mattered to them such as land rights, religious rights, and rights to good education and meaningful employment for the younger generation.

The former Minister of Works and current Selangau MP said the result was a rejection of GPS despite the large amount of money flowing into Ba Kelalan for the election as they are more concerned about justice, fair play and good governance.

He added that he was humbled by his party’s confidence in him to defend the seat and the voters wanting him to represent them despite contesting as an Opposition candidate again.

He thanked God , his constituents, party, family and election workers for sharing his concern for the Lun Bawang people and Sarawak.
