Pang eager to realise his manifesto for Tanjong Batu

Returning officer Abdul Rahim announces the victory for Johnny Pang (second left) against Tony Chiew (right) in Tanjong Batu.

BINTULU (Dec 20): There is little time to savour the victory for Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bintulu branch after over two decades of waiting in the Tanjong Batu seat.

Newly-elected Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming said there is nothing more mportant than to keep his election manifesto rolling smoothly within the next five years.

Pang, who is the SUPP Bintulu branch chairman, polled 4,092 votes to end the Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) 20-year dominance in the seat.

He defeated DAP’s Chiew Chan Yew by a slim margin of 23 votes in the six-cornered fight.

Andy Yek Hock Siang from Parti Bumi Kenyalang obtained the third highest with 2,204 votes followed by Parti Sarawak Bersatu’s Nicholas Tang Eng Hui (1,071), Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party’s Chieng Lea Phing (93) and Independent candidate Wong Hau Ming (38).

Returning officer Abdul Rahim Abdullah, when announcing the results, said a total of 11,567 votes were cast for a voter turnout of 51.38 per cent while 69 ballot papers were rejected.

SUPP had lost the seat previously under Kidurong to DAP in 1996 when Wong Sing Ai defeated incumbent Michael Sim Kiam Hui of Barisan Nasional with a slim majority of 22 votes.

DAP’s Chiew Chin Sing went on to win in four consecutive state elections in 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016.

“This is the victory of all the Bintulu people, especially those Tanjong Batu voters,” said Pang when met after the victory was announced around 10.54pm on Saturday.

“As I have said, if I am elected I will keep my promise and serve the voters of N68 Tanjong Batu with a sincere heart.

“This is just a starting point. My job now is to focus on making my manifesto a realisation,” he added.

He called on enemies and friends and other political parties who may have been directly or indirectly involved in any arguments during the campaigning period to close ranks and to move forward for a better Bintulu.
