Pang ends DAP’s 20-year reign in Tg Batu with slimmest 23-vote majority

Pang flashes the victory sign following his dramatic win.

BINTULU (Dec 18): The Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) control of the Tanjong Batu seat over the last 20 years has come to an end following a 23-vote majority win by Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) Johnny Pang Leong Ming.

It was a dream come true for the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bintulu chairman when returning officer Abdul Rahim Abdullah declared him the winner at 10.54pm.

The 61-year-old polled 4,092 votes to defeat DAP’s Tony Chiew Chan Yew, who received 4,069 votes.

Chiew had contested in place of his father, the four-term DAP incumbent Chiew Chin Sing, who had decided not to defend the seat.

The four other contenders for the seat were Andy Yek Hock Siang from Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) – 2,204 votes, Parti Sarawak Bersatu’s (PSB) Nicholas Tang Eng Hui – 1,071 votes, Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party’s (Aspirasi) Chieng Lea Phing – 93 votes, and Independent Wong Hau Ming – 38 votes.

SUPP’s victory in Tanjong Batu is expected to change the political landscape in the region.
