Pujut seat returns to SUPP after a long 10 years

GPS’s candidate and Miri mayor Adam Yii wrests Pujut back from DAP.

MIRI (Dec 18): The Pujut seat has finally returned to Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) after a long wait of ten years, after Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate Adam Yii won the seat with a majority of 1,566 votes.

In the five-cornered fight, he polled 5,558 against Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) Alan Ling, who garnered 3,992 votes, to wrest bac kthe seat that had been under DAP for a decade.

The other candidates, Parti Sarawak Bersatu’s (PSB) Bruce Chai received 1,667 votes, Parti Bumi Kenyalang’s Leslie Ting got 1,022 votes and Aspirasi’s Erick Chin only garnered 152 votes.

A total of 62 ballot boxes containing 12,541 votes were counted.

There were 96 spoilt votes, while 60 votes were not returned.

Pujut has a total of 27,559 registered voters.

The Pujut constituency was created in 2005 and was first contested in 2006, where it was won by then-BN SUPP candidate Andy Chia as its first assemblyman.

In the 2011 state election, BN lost the seat to DAP’s Fong Pau Teck, but he only stayed for one term as he was sacked by DAP in 2013.

DAP won the seat once again in the 2016 state election through its candidate Dr Ting Tiong Choon, but he was disqualified in February last year due to his dual citizenship.

Meanwhile, Yii was not present for comment when the results were announced by Returning Officer Siti Suhana Rosli at 8.25pm.

According to a source, Yii and his team from SUPP had flown down to Kuching.

Ling, who was met at the vote tallying centre at SK Anchi, said he humbly accepted the decision of Pujut voters with an open heart.

He believed that the result was also due to low voter turnout of less than 50 per cent.

“There are a number of factors that led to my defeat, but I must say that this is one of the ways GPS is strengthening their power by holding this election during this season (pandemic),” he said.

Ling added that DAP will carry out post-mortem on the election results, and find ways to join forces with other parties to boost the strength of the opposition throughout the state.

“We will see how we can join forces so that we can prepare to fight GPS in the next state election.

“My team and I will still stay on in Miri — even though we lose all the three seats, I will still be around to serve the people,” he said.
