Wong speaks to the press after the election results were announced.
SIBU (Dec 18): Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has attributed the party’s heavy losses in the 12th state election to the reluctance of Sarawakians to change.
The party contested in 70 state constituencies but only won four as of 11pm.
According to Wong, PSB had tried its best to bring about changes to the political landscape in the state.
“We cannot change the people unless they themselves want to change. And so, we accept the people’s decision, people’s choice, and GPS will continue to have the mandate to govern Sarawak,” he told reporters after the Bawang Assan election results were announced at the Sibu Civic Centre.
“People of Sarawak are not ready for change. You can see that in our manifesto, we spelt out very clearly that people’s wish for a better life is what we are struggling for. In our manifesto, we spelt out all the measures to bring about better livelihoods, better living for the people of Sarawak. Apparently, they cannot see that far.”
He said many probably still preferred immediate gratification.
According to him, PSB also failed to make inroads due to the influence of money, particularly in rural areas.
“I’ve gotten feedback from all of my candidates throughout Sarawak and the conclusion is money is king,” he claimed.
Wong also claimed headmen had received threats they would lose their positions if they were to support Opposition parties such as PSB.
He congratulated GPS under the leadership of Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for the coalition’s resounding victory.
Wong retained Bawang Assan with a slim majority of 913 votes after polling 5,952 votes.
GPS’s Senator Robert Lau managed 5,039 votes, while the Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) Amy Lau Bik Yieng received 1,173 votes, Parti Bumi Kenyalang’s (PBK) Michelle Ling had 954 votes, and Independent Ricky Enteri managed just 645 votes.
