SIBU (Dec 18): Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has said that he was able to defend the Bawang Assan seat this time due to the strong support from the Chinese community.

According to him, he had lost quite heavily in the Dayak areas this time around, but the loss was made up for by the strong support from the Chinese community.

He said he would have lost the election if not because of the Chinese votes.

“I won handsomely in the past six terms in the Dayaks areas, some even 90 per cent or 80 per cent, never below 70 per cent.

“But this time around, to my surprise, I lost quite heavily in the Dayak areas, but my loss in the Iban area is made up for by the strong support from the Chinese community,” he said.

For example, he said he had won in the polling stations at SJKC Chung Hua and Chung Hua kindergarten.

“I never won (from these two polling stations) in the past six terms. I would like to thank the Chinese community in Bawang Assan for their strong support so that I can still survive as the Yang Berhormat serving Bawang Assan,” he said.

Wong, who managed to defend the Bawang Assan seat for the seventh term after garnering 5,952 votes, which he said was dedicated to his late son Dato Andrew Wong.

He also thanked his family, especially his wife, for supporting him throughout his political life.

“All glory to God as well because it is God’s will that he still wants me to carry on to serve the people although I am almost 80 years old.

“I would do so, helping the people as much as I can in the remaining years of my political life,” he enthused.

Wong won with the majority of 913 votes against Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew who had 5,039 votes, followed by Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) Amy Lau Bik Yieng with 1,173 votes, Parti Bumi Kenyalang’s (PBK) Michelle Ling with 954 votes and Independent’s Ricky Enteri with 645 votes.
