KUCHING (Aug 21): Sarawak has recorded an increase in the number of dengue cases from 263 in 2021 to 384 cases as of August this year.
Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian said that despite the increase of 121 cases, the situation here is still under control as compared to the rest of the country.
Dr Sim who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local government said for Malaysia’s 31st epidemiology week (July 31 to Aug 6), the number of dengue cases was 1,394 cases compared to 1,542 cases the previous week.
“There is a decrease in the number of cases, with no deaths reported,” he said at the Anti-Dengue Campaign held at RPR Batu Kawa here yesterday.
Citing the one dengue case reported in RPR Batu Kawa last year, he expressed his hope for all the residents to set a target of zero case this year.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Cr Lo Khere Chiang who was also present said the event was part of the Padawan Municipal Council anti-dengue awareness campaign to raise awareness on the importance of prevention against dengue.
“Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection that is common in warm, tropical climates. The symptoms may be extremely mild to those that may require medical intervention and hospitalization, to fatalities,” he said.
Lo added that earlier this year, the World Health Organisation has listed dengue as a potential threat for the year and the current outbreaks in many countries have confirmed this observation.
During the event, participants took part in a walk around the housing area to check and remove stagnant water on premises and eliminate potential mosquito breeding grounds.
