KUCHING (Aug 21): The new headquarters of the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) will be built on a 20-acre site at Semengok, Mile 12 Kuching-Serian Road, says Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

He said the RM60 million project funded by the Sarawak government is a gift to staff of MPP for their hard work.

According to Dr Sim, MPP has a very challenging task given the size of the area it serves that includes urban and semi-urban areas, as well as meeting the demands of an ageing population, urbanisation, demographic changes and population growth.

“I hope the new building will provide a better working environment and MPP staff will be motivated to work harder to deliver better services to communities and serve the people better,” he said at MPP’s 26th anniversary celebration dinner in a hotel here yesterday.

Dr Sim, who is also Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister, said there is much more that needs to be done by local authorities including MPP to build a more sustainable future for Sarawak.

He commended MPP for their tremendous efforts and high level of resilience in the face of Covid-19, recovery from the pandemic and revival of the economy.

“MPP has accomplished a lot, and yet there is still so much more to do to be an efficient and sustainable Padawan municipality,” he added.

Meanwhile, MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang admitted the many challenges and work constraints from various communities under MPP jurisdiction, especially on good quality services from time to time.

Having served as MPP chairman for almost 12 years, Lo added that it is his dream to improve the council’s service delivery of its core activities and intends to continue engaging with residents, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), community associations and community leaders to bring improvement and make areas under the council clean, green and good place to live in.
