TATAU (March 26): A total of 47 tuberculosis (TB) cases have been detected in Tatau district and it deserves serious attention, said Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department Datuk John Sikie Tayai.
The Kakus assemblyman said awareness programmes on TB should be held regularly to ensure that rural communities understand how contagious the disease is and how to prevent it from spreading.
“I hope the Ministry of Health Malaysia, especially Tatau Health Office, will take proactive measures in holding more tuberculosis awareness programmes,” he said at the Tuberculosis and Health Screening for Rumah Jelembai Community Programme at Sungai Sap yesterday.
Sikie said family members should practise good hygiene and seek immediate medical care if a family member is confirmed to be infected with TB.
It is best to go for a TB screening at health clinics if a family member or a close contact has TB, he added.
“Don’t be ashamed if you are infected, instead seek treatment immediately and make sure all immediate family members undergo a tuberculosis screening,” he said.
Meanwhile, he announced a minor rural project (MRP) grant of RM14,000 to Rumah Jelembai village security and development committee (JKKK) for its annual activities and other programmes to benefit the residents.
Representative from the Tatau Health Clinic Dr Siti Amnah Roharat, Tatau District Officer Juntan Branch, Pemancha Gerosen Jubin and Penghulu Sanok Magai were among those present.
