MIRI (March 26): The Miri City Council (MCC) has advised commercial building owners here to remove any unauthorised awnings in concerns over public safety.
MCC in a statement said this following an incident on Friday where some parts of the roof and awnings of several shophouses at Jalan Melayu had collapsed onto the main road due to damage from heavy rain and strong winds that day.
“In 2016, MCC came up with a guideline and policy for awning installation in commercial buildings.
“The main objective of the guideline is to ensure that public safety is taken into account when a structure is erected,” it said.
The guideline and policy is to reduce the issue of illegal awning installation and other building structures by business owners on their premises around Miri without proper procedures and guidelines.
Such illegal awning structures at commercial buildings might pose danger to the public.
Under the registration policy, it is stated that the owner is required to provide public safety liability insurance as any building structure or extension of the building falls under the owner’s responsibility.
Therefore, business owners are reminded to submit their application to MCC for any extensions or awning installation.
