Wee: Relaxing limited operating hours should be considered when Covid-19 situation under control

Wee speaking to the press during a Kenyalang Gold Card distribution event at Gala City, Jalan Datuk Tawi Sli here today.

KUCHING: Consideration for relaxing the limited operating hours policy imposed on businesses in the state should be given if the Covid-19 situation in the state is brought fully under control, opined Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations (SFCA) president Dato Richard Wee.

“Personally, if you ask me, I think I would like to go back to the normal operating hours as soon as possible but if the situation does not warrant it, I think it’s better for us to be more careful than sorry,” said Wee.

He shared his personal opinion with reporters when met after a Kenyalang Gold Card distribution event organised by Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions at Gala City, Jalan Datuk Tawi Sli here today.

Wee added that businesses had been trying their best to adapt to the limited operating hours and he hoped the operating hours could be extended for the benefits of the business community when the Covid-19 situation improved.

“However, personally, I think that pubs are a problem. Although such outlets do not serve food, the problem is after drinking, sometimes people would naturally forget about social distancing,” he said.

Nonetheless, he commended the State Disaster Management Committee that had been very active in reacting to the changes and new developments brought by Covid-19 outbreak as well as being responsive to the needs of the community.

Wee also believed that customers’ confidence in businesses would still need time to recover due to the outbreak, especially when the Covid-19 situation remained very uncertain with new developments emerging every now and then.

He pointed out there was already a lack of confidence among parents in sending their children to schools as the average student attendance in schools was only in the range of 60 to 70 per cent currently.
